San Diego Area Players Advance in Tennis Meet

All four San Diego-area players--Vanessa Rooks, Marisa Velasco, Molly Gavin and Erin Lowrey--won their second-round matches Monday and advanced in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Girls’ 16 National Championships at Morley Field.

In addition to No. 3 Rooks and No. 8 Velasco, seven of the top eight seeded players advanced to today’s third round.

Spring Valley’s Rooks defeated Courtney Chapman of Jackson, Miss., 6-3, 6-1, and Vista’s Velasco downed Cena Hackler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., 6-1, 7-6.

Escondido’s Gavin, the No. 12 seed, had little problems with Sora Moon of Centerville, Ohio, winning, 6-4, 6-1, and unseeded Lowrey of La Jolla defeated Sara Naison-Phillips of Brooklyn, N.Y., 6-3, 6-4.

The one seeded player losing was No. 5 Brandi Freudenberg of Orange. She lost to Corina Morariu of Boca Raton, Fla., 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Betsy Miringoff of La Costa defeated Sarah Mecham of Salt Lake City, Utah, 6-2, 6-2, in a second-round match in the USTA Girls’ 18 National Championship at San Jose.

BASEBALL

Al Thielemann and Eric Chavez combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the California Orange Crush routed Maryland, 17-0, and finished 6-0 in pool play in the Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. World Series for boys 13-14.

Thiemann of Vista pitched the first four innings and Chavez of Rancho Penaquitos the fifth as the game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of a 10-run rule.

The Orange Crush, which has 10 players from San Diego, had 13 hits, including a three-run home run by Carlos Aukerman (Rancho Penasquitos), a two-run homer by Mike Hymes (Del Mar) and solo shots by Brett Bailey and Chavez.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Susan Pankou of San Diego shot a 77 and is tied for 29th, 12 strokes behind the leader Emilee Klein of Studio City after the first round of qualifying in the 92nd U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Long Grove, Ill.

The top 64 golfers after today’s second round will qualify for match play beginning Wednesday on the 6,345-yard, par-72 Kemper Lakes Club course. Another notable, Raenna Staples of Miami, at 12 the youngest player in the field of 149, shot an 80. Staples started playing golf at 2.
