Torero Soccer Team Opens With Win Over Bakersfield

The University of San Diego men’s soccer team opened its season with a 3-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday with goals from Toby Taitano, Guillermo Jaro and Doug Berry.

Jaro, a freshman forward, also had an assist as USD withstood a 15-shot attack from Bakersfield. USD got off only six shots.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

USD won its preliminary match in the Anteater Invitational at Irvine--sweeping three games from Eastern Washington, 16-14, 15-9, 15-12--then fell in the championship game to Irvine, 15-11, 15-13, 13-15, 15-13.

Amy McMahon led USD (3-2) with 24 kills during the day and teammate Jennifer Loftus had 22.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Paced by winning efforts from sophomore Jennifer McCann and junior Dean Cortez, both USD teams triumphed over Loyola Marymount in the opening dual meet for both schools. USD’s women won, 24-31, and the men prevailed, 24-43.

McCann’s winning time over the 5,000-meter course at Balboa Park’s Morley Field was 21 minutes 32.1 seconds, and Cortez covered the same ground in 17:15.6.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. men’s volleyball team, which trains in San Diego, posted a 9-15, 15-10, 15-6, 15-4 triumph over Olympic silver medalist Netherlands to capture third place in the $3-million World League tournament Saturday in Genoa, Italy.

The U.S. share of the prize money comes to $200,000.

Ten of the 12 American players were members of the bronze-medal Olympic team, and its finish represents its best in the three-year-old World League.

Brent Hilliard of Dana Point paced the American offense with 16 kills, and two-time Olympian Doug Partie of Santa Barbara recorded 13 kills and three blocks.

Italy claimed its third consecutive World League crown with a 14-16, 15-3, 15-11, 15-11 victory over Cuba. The victory was worth $1 million and the Cubans take home $300,000.
