Coach: Kerry Leander (sixth year).

1991: 21-2, 10-0 in league; won South Coast League title; lost to Santa Barbara in Southern Section Division 4-A semifinals.

Key returners: Maria Nguyen, So., replaces Page Bartelt (now at Arizona State) at No. 1 singles; Jennie Canfield, Sr., played doubles past two seasons but could move to singles; Jenny Chang, Sr., was 45-12 in doubles last year.

Key newcomers: Brogan Lefebvre, Sr.; Shannon Shook, Sr.; Ashley Taylor, Fr.

Outlook: The Cougars have won four South Coast League titles and 47 of 50 league matches (81-21 overall) during that span under Leander, losing only to nemesis Dana Hills. The two, plus new member Mater Dei, are the unquestionable class of the league. Said Leander: “We are going to lack a superstar player like we had before (Page Bartelt has graduated). We don’t have that standout who can give us three sets, but we are going to beat people at the No. 2 and 3 spot. We have good depth.” Leander has eight players back with varsity experience, including five starters.
