Girls’ Volleyball Tournament Includes Three State Champions

Laguna Beach will defend its Division I championship Saturday at the Orange County High School girls’ volleyball championships.

Pool play in three divisions begins at 8:30 a.m., with the playoffs tentatively scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Division I will be played at Marina High School, Division II at Huntington Beach High and Division III at Westminster High.

Other top teams in Division I include three defending State champions--El Toro (Division I), La Habra (Division II) and Capistrano Valley Christian (Division V). Corona del Mar and Capistrano Valley also are among the Division I favorites.

The top teams in Division II include Sunny Hills, Los Alamitos, Dana Hills and Santa Margarita.

Division III favorites are Whittier Christian, La Quinta, Ocean View and Costa Mesa.

Division I

Pool A--Capistrano Valley, El Modena, Fountain Valley, Mater Dei, Newport Harbor.

Pool B--Capistrano Valley Christian, Corona del Mar, La Habra, Marina, San Clemente.

Pool C--Edison, El Toro, Irvine, Laguna Beach, University.

Division II

Pool A--Estancia, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, Mission Viejo, Santa Margarita, Sunny Hills.

Pool B--Cypress, Dana Hills, Esperanza, Foothill, Tustin, Woodbridge.

Rocky Ciarelli, boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at Huntington Beach High, has been selected to coach Team Toyota at the Team Cup championships next month.

Ciarelli will coach a lineup that includes two-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly, beach star Tim Hovland and Olympic bronze medalist Nick Becker of Newport Beach.

“Karch just called me a few weeks ago and asked me if I wanted to do it,” said Ciarelli, who played in the tournament in 1989.

The four-team, round-robin competition will be held Oct. 2, 9, 22 and 25 at the Forum.
