George Keiaho, Buena High’s talented junior running back, exceeded the 3,000-yard mark Friday by rushing for 169 yards in 28 carries against Agoura.

Keiaho, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons, has 3,161 yards in 22 games, an average of 143.7 a game.

Barring injuries, and assuming he plays in at least one playoff game in each of the next two seasons, Keiaho is on pace to finish his high school career with 6,034 yards.

Crespi’s Russell White, now a Heisman Trophy candidate at California, rushed for 5,998 yards from 1986-88 to establish what was then the state rushing record.

David Dotson, a 1992 graduate of Valley View High in Moreno Valley, holds the record with 7,265 yards.

Rushing: The leading ground gainer among Marmonte League running backs is not Quincy Jacobs of Thousand Oaks, Michael Streeter of Royal or Fahali Campbell of Camarillo--each of whom gained more than 1,000 yards last year. The distinction belongs to Agoura senior Scott Mitchell, a part-time starter last season who has 350 yards and six touchdowns in 40 carries.

Campbell rushed for 251 yards last week against Rio Mesa, but Streeter and Jacobs were outgained by their backfield mates. Sophomore Mike Reddington led Royal with 76 yards in seven carries against Saugus; Streeter was held to four yards in seven carries. Fred Polito led Thousand Oaks with 60 yards in 13 carries against Hart; Jacobs gained 33 yards in 11 carries.

Canoga Park’s Rashaud Vaughn, who has 313 yards in 63 carries, trails only Taft’s Jerry Brown (38 carries, 354 yards) as the area’s leading City Section rusher. Vaughn has accounted for two-thirds of Canoga Park’s total yardage (473).

Passing: Keith Smith of Newbury Park has established three single-game school records and tied another this season. Smith had 43 attempts last week against San Marcos to break his own record of 41 set last season, and with 25 completions Friday he tied the school record he set last season.

In the opener against Hueneme, Smith, a 6-foot, 170-pound junior, passed for 327 yards and five touchdowns, both school records. Smith held the previous record for yards in a game with 321. Jayson Merrill held the previous record for touchdown passes in a game with four against El Camino Real in 1986.

Defense: Burbank sophomore defensive back Carlos Baker accounted for more yardage in interception returns than did Bell-Jeff on offense in Burbank’s 49-7 victory last week. In returning three interceptions for touchdowns, Baker totaled 129 yards. The Guards had only 114 total yards. . . . Reseda defensive end Patrick Marquez might not be the biggest player at his position, but he finds a way to stir up trouble. Marquez, a 5-9, 165-pound senior, made 12 solo tackles and assisted on four in Reseda’s 10-0 loss to Canoga Park last week. . . . Defensive end Josh Gibson leads Alemany with 17 solo tackles in two games.

Offense: Among the eight Marmonte League teams, Thousand Oaks, a perennial power, ranks last in total offense. The Lancers have gained 495 yards in two games, 349 rushing. . . . Antelope Valley was outgained by West Bakersfield, 221 yards to 89, but won, 15-13.

Sylmar gained 348 yards in 41 plays against Chatsworth for an 8.5-yard average. Take away three big touchdown plays--a 66-yard pass, a 67-yard run, and an 81-yard pass--and the Spartans would have averaged only 3.5 yards.

Newbury Park receivers Leodes Van Buren (16 catches, 244 yards) and Jason Toohey (17, 160) have combined for 404 yards in receptions.

Brett Miller, a returning All-Pacific League receiver at Crescenta Valley, has only four catches in two games. If Miller is trying to impress recruiters, he might be on the wrong team. With his team having changed quarterbacks from David Fielder to Mike Kocicka last week, Coach Jim Beckenhauer said the Falcons will primarily run the ball.

Extra points: Antelope Valley’s Chad Shrout punted five times for a 45.4-yard average against West Bakersfield. . . . Monroe senior Jeff Nadeau has scored three touchdowns, even though he has touched the ball only once on offense. Nadeau has scored on a seven-yard pass reception, a 91-yard kickoff return and a 50-yard punt return.

Despite an 0-2 record, Hoover has averaged 387 yards a game. The problem is the Tornadoes have given up 430 per game. Hoover attempted 51 passes Friday and did not allow a sack or get penalized for holding. The Tornadoes have allowed only one sack.

Water polo: Eleven Ventura players scored goals in Saturday’s 16-7 victory over Calabasas for third place in the Calabasas tournament. Ventura’s Josh Chinn scored three.

Statistics through Monday.
