ROUNDUP : USF Blanks Northridge in Soccer

The University of San Francisco men’s soccer team scored a pair of goals in the second half Thursday to defeat Cal State Northridge, 2-0, in a nonconference match at USF’s Negoesco Stadium.

Senior forward Angelo Sablo scored 41 seconds into the second half on an assist from Greg Vandenberg, then assisted on a goal by Cato Solberg with 21 minutes to play. USF (5-2), ranked 15th in the nation by Soccer America, outshot the Matadors (3-3), 11-5.

“I think it was a game of who was going to score first,” Northridge Coach Marwan Ass’ad said. “We really outplayed them in the first half and we came so close to scoring. But they put the pressure on us in the second half.”

Goalkeepers Louie Mata of Northridge and Scott Thompson of San Francisco each made two saves.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 12, Walnut 8--Alan Paul scored four goals and eight teammates added goals as the Wolverines beat Walnut in the second round of the La Serna tournament.

In the opening round, Harvard-Westlake (8-1) defeated Mater Dei, 15-6. Ron Scott and Richard Won each scored hat tricks.

Goalkeepers Peter Kiefer, Bete Khiatian and Teague McKnight shared duty in both games.

Harvard-Westlake will play Hacienda Heights Wilson in today’s quarterfinal round.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Belmont 16, Birmingham 61, Bell 68, Taft 109--Sophomore Rosanna Heagerty placed fifth for Birmingham in the opening nonleague meet at Griffith Park.

Heagerty timed 19 minutes 36 seconds over the 2.9-mile course.

Junior Patty Trejo timed 18:09 to win the race for Belmont, the three-time defending City Section champion.

Louisville 27, Harvard-Westlake 28--Jenny Wong of Westlake timed 19:46 over the three-mile course to win the race at Pierce College, but Louisville edged the Wolverines.

Several City Section meets involving 23 schools were to be held in conjunction with the meet but were canceled by section officials because of high temperatures.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Newbury Park, 15-5, 15-11, 13-15, 15-3--Carrie Penfield had 10 blocks and six kills to help the Lancers (5-0, 2-0 in league play) past visiting Newbury Park (3-2, 1-1) in a Marmonte League match.

Royal d. Simi Valley, 15-8, 15-7, 15-10--Kristen Fick led the Highlanders (2-2, 1-1) with nine kills and four solo blocks in a three-game sweep of visiting Simi Valley in a Marmonte League match.

Teri Enright added eight kills for Royal, which recorded 10 aces.

Chaminade d. St. Bernard, 7-15, 15-4, 17-15, 18-16--Kristine Esters and Rebecca Latta each recorded game-winning kills in overtime for visiting Chaminade in a Mission League match. Esters had a team-high 11 kills and Latta had seven. Katy Bloodgood had 28 assists.

Notre Dame d. Louisville 15-9, 15-12, 15-13--Kristine Wellman had nine kills and Tricia Bienlein had 18 assists to lead visiting Notre Dame (2-3, 1-1) in a Mission League match.

Marianne Cantwell and Heather Calawaert each had three kills for Louisville (1-4, 0-2). Teammate Danielle Ariola had 10 assists.

Hart d. Hesperia, 15-4, 15-11, 11-15, 15-1--Shannon Martin led the host Indians (2-1) with 10 kills and Becky Rosenberg added 30 assists to lead Hart in a nonleague match.

Nordhoff d. La Reina, 15-7, 15-8, 15-3--Alison Nofrey had 12 kills and Jami Sawyer added seven for host Nordhoff to a nonleague win.

Viewpoint d. Pilgrim, 15-13, 15-11, 11-15, 15-9--Jennifer Martin and Sonia Badreshia each had nine kills and Christina Paras had nine assists for Viewpoint (4-1, 2-0) in a Heritage League game.

Cornerstone Christian d. Highland Hall, 15-6, 15-7, 12-15, 15-9--Carrie Cregar had three kills and Jessica Jacobs had five assists for visiting Highland Hall in a nonleague match.
