Oxnard High’s Robert Meek was a one-man wrecking crew Friday night.

Meek, a 5-foot-11 junior, scored both of the Yellowjacket touchdowns and his stellar special-teams play led Oxnard (3-0) to a 14-7 nonleague victory over Channel Islands at Oxnard High.

Meek’s first touchdown came as he was playing defensive back with Channel Islands leading 7-0. Meek grabbed a ball that bounced off Channel Islands wide receiver Pete Mendez’s shoulder pads at the Channel Islands 20 and sprinted into the end zone.

Larry Bumpus’ two-point conversion run gave the Yellowjackets an 8-7 halftime lead.

Meek sealed the victory for Oxnard with 5 minutes 34 seconds to play, this time operating as quarterback. Meek scored on a 32-yard option run to give the Yellowjackets a 14-7 lead. His two-point conversion run was stopped, however.

Channel Islands (2-1) took only three plays from scrimmage on the opening drive to score as quarterback Mike Mariz tossed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Brian Ortiz.

Mariz completed eight of 22 passes for 154 yards with three interceptions.

Bumpus led the Oxnard ground attack with 145 yards in 23 carries and tailback Adrian Wilson added 77 yards in 19 carries.

Oxnard, ranked seventh in Southern Section Division III, played without senior fullback Lloyd Mix. Coach Jack Davis said Mix could miss at least one more week because of a shoulder bruise.
