Brennan’s Touchdown Passes Lead Western to 17-13 Victory

Brandon Brennan passed for 179 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard scoring pass to Steve Christensen, to lead Western to a 17-13 victory over La Quinta at Bolsa Grande High.

Running back Matt Miller handled the bulk of the rushing duties for Western, gaining 50 yards in 12 carries.

The Pioneer defense shut down La Quinta, holding the Aztecs scoreless through three quarters. Defensive back Jason Diaz made four tackles, blocked a punt and intercepted a pass to lead the Western defense.

Western (3-0) built a 14-0 lead. Brennan’s long pass to Christensen put the Pioneers ahead, 7-0, early in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, he hooked up with tight end Chris Karrer on a 20-yard touchdown pass.

La Quinta was led by sophomore quarterback C.J. Livernois, who passed for 119 yards and rushed for 34, including a nifty eight-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

Western’s Jason Covarrubias made a 31-yard field goal with 3:30 left in the game to put the Pioneers ahead, 17-7.

Aztec receiver Pat Wilson, who caught five passes for 46 yards, scored on a seven-yard pass from backup quarterback Jason Gondringer with less than two minutes remaining.
