The Marshall High football team defeated Wilson last season for the first time in 40 years.

On Friday, Marshall plays host to the Mules, who they have not defeated at home since 1942.

Marshall is 1-2 after last week’s 13-7 loss to Van Nuys. Quarterback Shane Gerard has completed 22 of 43 passes for 507 yards and four touchdowns. He has had three passes intercepted.

St. Francis High quarterback Rudy Martinez is probably out for the season after suffering a separated right shoulder during the Golden Knights’ 42-0 loss to Loyola.

The Crescenta Valley water polo team finished 16th in the highly competitive 32-team South Coast tournament in Irvine.

Roman Kudirka and Ryan Bittle played well for the Falcons, who took a 9-4 record into Wednesday’s Pacific League opener against Muir.

The Hoover and Glendale girls’ volleyball teams tied for sixth place at the Hoover-Glendale tournament last weekend at Hoover.

Mater Dei defeated Arcadia for the championship.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College football team enters Saturday’s Western State Conference game against Santa Monica after suffering its first defeat last weekend against Los Angeles Valley.

Glendale (1-1, 0-1 in the WSC) lost to Valley, 28-21, after falling behind, 21-0.

“We just didn’t play well in the first half,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. “We had some breakdowns that they turned into scoring opportunities.

“We also had a lot of opportunities to score but we just didn’t cash them in.”

Tailback Pathon Rucker made his first appearance of the season for Glendale and rushed for 144 yards in 25 carries.

Quarterback Eric Kiesau completed 12 of 24 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown.

Santa Monica is 0-2 after losses to Saddleback and Moorpark.

COLLEGES

The Occidental football team plays host to Whittier College in its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

Occidental, which suffered a season-opening defeat to Menlo, rebounded with a 39-0 victory over Trinity College (Tex.) last week.

Six Occidental players scored touchdowns in the victory as the Tigers gained 423 yards. In two games, fullback Marcus Garrett has gained 130 yards in 10 carries.

Occidental leads the SCIAC in defense, limiting opponents to 243.5 yards a game. The Tigers are third in offense at 328 yards a game.

Whittier (0-2) lost to Menlo last week, 34-24. The Poets are coached by Ken Visser, a former player at Occidental. Whittier averages 310.5 yards a game on offense and gives up 274.5.

Whittier quarterback Eric Jencks has completed six of 20 passes for 127 yards. Running back George Marquecho has gained 143 yards in 22 carries.

The Occidental men’s and women’s cross-country teams travel to the Stanford Invitational this weekend after winning the Division III class at a meet at UC Riverside on Saturday.

Jose Garcia of Occidental won the men’s event, covering the five-mile course in 25 minutes 10 seconds. Konstantine Kinderich of Occidental was second in 25:40 and Will Allan of Occidental was third in 26:03.

Becky Kopchick won the women’s 5-K race in 18:32. Arcelia Gomez of Occidental was second in 18:41.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jon Berg, Crescenta Valley--Berg, a senior defensive lineman who was a Times’ All-Glendale selection as a sophomore, has come back strong after missing most of last season because of injury.

Berg led a Falcon defense that shut out Burbank, 28-0, and helped Crescenta Valley improve to 3-0. Crescenta Valley will need another strong performance by Berg and its defense when the Falcons play South Pasadena tonight at Glendale High.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Andrew Wind, Occidental--Wind, a junior defensive back, returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown and intercepted a pass during the Tigers’ 39-0 victory over Trinity College (Tex.).

MISCELLANY

The City of Glendale will offer youth team tennis beginning Oct. 25 at Fremont Park. Sign-ups are Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Fremont Park tennis booth. Tryouts will be Sunday. Information: (818) 548-3796.
