HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Behind Baker’s Two Touchdowns, Helix Overwhelms No. 4 Point Loma

In what could have been billed as a showing of the Fabulous Baker Boys, Helix’s Chris Baker enabled the Highlanders to deal Point Loma its worst regular-season defeat in seven years, 28-0, Friday night in front of 3,000 at Helix.

Baker rushed for 127 yards in 18 carries and scored two first-half touchdowns as No. 2 Helix improved to 4-0.

Fourth-ranked Point Loma, 2-2, probably will have to play the rest of the season without wingback Shaunta Baker, who suffered a severe left knee injury in his only carry of the game.

“We’ll miss Shaunta,” Point Loma Coach Bennie Edens said. “He’s an outstanding player. That’s a tough break for him because he’s a heck of an athlete, and this is his senior year.”

Combined with El Camino’s loss at Torrey Pines, the Highlanders probably will move up to No. 1 in the county next week.

“That was a great game for our kids,” Helix Coach Jim Arnaiz said. “We wanted to play a full 48 minutes this week, and I think we did that.”

Said Edens: “I just think (Arnaiz) had his kids ready. They were prepared. They played well. They were certainly the better team tonight.”

Point Loma hadn’t lost by this much since 1985, when El Camino shut out the Pointers, 35-0.

Point Loma had beaten Helix by identical 10-7 scores the past two years, but Helix scored 14 Friday in the first 12:07. Baker had both touchdowns on runs of 29 and 19 yards.

Both teams are traditionally strong on defense, but it was Helix doing most of the flexing this time, limiting Point Loma to 193 total yards and recording its second shutout of the season. Among the numerous big plays, Keith Harrison recovered two fumbles and Robert Crayton one.
