SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Unranked El Toro stopped Rialto Eisenhower, The Times’ top-ranked team in Southern California, twice near the goal line in the fourth quarter to preserve a surprising 14-14 tie Friday night at Eisenhower High.

The second defensive stand came with less than three minutes left in the game. Eisenhower (3-0-1) had a first down and goal at the El Toro one-yard line after a 25-yard run by quarterback Glenn Thompkins. But on the next play, Eisenhower running back Julius McChristian fumbled, and linebacker Scott Sieb recovered.

El Toro (1-2-1) advanced as far as its own 32, but a holding call sent the Chargers back 10 yards. El Toro got off one more play before time ran out.

“The game was a real confidence-builder for our defense,” El Toro Coach Mike Milner said. “We faced a very talented team with great speed, and we really shut them down. Both teams had their chances, but we should have won the ball game.”

Earlier in the second half, Eisenhower, which also is ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division I poll, held the ball for more than seven minutes and had a first and goal at the El Toro eight with 8:14 left.

Two running plays moved the ball to the two-yard line, but on third down Thompkins’ pass fell incomplete. Thompkins’ fourth-down swing pass was caught by Damond Wilkins, who was stopped a foot short of a touchdown.

El Toro trailed at the end of the first quarter, 7-0, but scored two touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead at the half. The Chargers’ tying touchdown came on a nine-yard pass from quarterback Bryan Lefevers to tight end Matt Harding with 11:19 left in the second quarter.

The score was set by Thompkins’ fumble at the Eisenhower 21, which was recovered by defensive back Jeff Kato. Four plays later, Harding scored the touchdown.

El Toro started its next scoring drive from the Eisenhower 39 after a 14-yard punt return by Aaron Drootin with 1:10 left in the half. Lefevers hooked up with Joey Longo on a 25-yard pass and then hit him with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the half.

Eisenhower had scored in the first quarter on a seven-yard run by Wilkins after Thompkins appeared stopped on the option play. Eisenhower scored the tying touchdown on a one-yard run by Marlon Farlow with 5:57 left in the third quarter.

El Toro had four possessions in the second half with little success against the Eisenhower defense. During the first three, the Chargers gained a total of 10 yards and finished with 33 yards in total offense in the half. El Toro didn’t get past its own 32-yard line in the half.
