Valley College’s Howard Blackwell took over the Western State Conference rushing lead with his 113-yard performance in a 56-10 victory over Compton. Blackwell, a transfer from Oregon who played at Hart High, has 411 yards in three games. His average of 137 yards a game ranks fifth in the state.

Blackwell also has 56 yards in receptions and 151 yards in punt and kickoff returns, giving him 618 all-purpose yards. His average of 206 all-purpose yards a game places him in a tie for second in the state.

With eight touchdowns in three games, Blackwell ranks second in the state in scoring with an average of 16 points a game.

Pathon Rucker, Glendale’s freshman tailback, has rushed for 254 yards in two games. He ranks 10th in the state with an average of 127 yards a game. . . . Moorpark ranks second in the state in defense, giving up 158.3 yards a game. Antelope Valley, which shut out Rio Hondo, 21-0, last week, is sixth in defense, giving up 172 yards a game.

Valley gained 629 yards against Compton, moving the Monarchs up to sixth in the state in offense. Valley averages 439.7 yards a game.

With a team-high 15 tackles against Idaho, Cal State Northridge free safety Gerald Ponder increased his team-leading total to 56. . . . Northridge cornerback Ralph Henderson made seven solo tackles to run his total to 26, second to Ponder, who has 28.

Outside linebacker Ivy Calvin made 11 tackles (eight solo), deflected a pass, caused a fumble and made one quarterback hurry to move into the Northridge lead in defensive points with 158. Outside linebacker Angel Chavez is second with 150, followed by Ponder (145), Henderson (127) and inside linebacker Tyrone Dorsey (104).

Women’s volleyball: Antelope Valley has won all seven of its matches and has won 17 consecutive Foothill Conference matches over two seasons. The Marauders also have won 11 in a row at home.

Antelope Valley’s Rose Johnson entered action Wednesday as the Foothill Conference leader in kills with 75. She was second in hitting percentage at .595 and second in stuff blocks with 16.

Andrea Buckner of Antelope Valley was fourth with 56 kills and eighth in hitting percentage at .412. Setter Aimee Sayles ranks second in the conference with 175 assists.

Men’s soccer: Danny Daniels and Armando Valdivia of Northridge are eighth and tied for 10th, respectively, in scoring in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Daniels, a senior forward, has five goals and six assists for 16 points; Valdivia, a junior midfielder, has 13 points on five goals and three assists.
