Sophomore running back Mike Flores scored two touchdowns to help Savanna came back to defeat La Habra, 27-20, in nonleague football Thursday at Western High.

The Rebels (3-2) trailed, 20-13, with 10:22 to play after La Habra’s Mike Dominguez scored on a one-yard run. But Savanna’s Daven King returned the kickoff 85 yards to the Highlander five, and Alfred Delgadillo scored on the next play. Paul Waldrop passed to Steve Broswell for the two-point conversion.

On Savanna’s next possession, Flores broke free on a 72-yard run for the clinching touchdown with 6:19 left. Flores had only five carries but gained 98 yards. He scored the Rebels’ second touchdown, on a 10-yard run, with 56 seconds left in the half, but the conversion attempt was wide right, leaving La Habra (1-4) with a 14-13 halftime lead.

Quarterback Josh Woolf completed a 30-yard scoring pass to Steve Busch for the Highlanders’ first score. Less than two minutes later, after a Henry Rodriguez interception, Jake Gomez scored on a six-yard run. Gomez led La Habra with 72 rushing yards in 15 attempts.

“The most important thing about this win is that we didn’t give up,” Savanna Coach Fred DiPalma said. “This makes me feel very good going in to league (against Anaheim) next week.”
