Call it a political football game: one minute one way, one minute the other.

In the end, though, momentum swung toward Baldwin Park, which beat West Hills Chaminade, 38-32, in a wild nonleague game Friday night in Chaminade.

Baldwin Park, ranked 15th in The Times’ top 20, trailed, 24-6, late in the second quarter but rallied with a dominant third quarter for the victory, raising its record to 5-0.

Baldwin Park’s star running back, Lawrence Phillips, led all rushers with 221 yards and four touchdowns in 23 carries, including an 80-yarder that provided the winning score.

After the Braves scored 26 consecutive points to take a 32-24 lead with 11 minutes 56 seconds to play, they held on through a series of wild events.

On the kickoff after falling behind by eight points, Chaminade (3-2) fumbled, giving Baldwin Park the ball in position to put away the game. But a few plays later, Brave quarterback Raul Rodriguez fumbled. The ball was scooped up by Chaminade’s Mher Filmardirossian, who ran it the Baldwin Park 22.

On the next play, Chaminade’s Franklin Saunders scored. The two-point conversion tied the game, 32-32, with 9:30 to play.

But on Baldwin Park’s first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Phillips took off untouched on an 80-yard sweep.

“He’s every bit as good as they say he is,” Baldwin Park Coach Tony Zane said. “I just gave him the ball and he broke the game open.”

If Chaminade had any hope of coming back, it ended when punter Gilbert Vega called a pass play at the line of scrimmage out of punt formation on a fourth and six. He completed a pass to Jorge Rivera.

Baldwin Park’s speed beat Chaminade. Besides Phillips’ run, the Braves connected on several long passes when Fabian Sesma got behind the defense. Sesma caught five passes for 195 yards, including a 91-yard touchdown.

Baldwin Park quarterback Rodriguez completed eight of 13 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns.

Chaminade’s Ryan Graves completed nine of 15 for 111 yards. The Eagles’ offense was led by Justin Giovannettone, who gained 121 yards in 20 carries and Saunders, who gained 95 yards in nine attempts.

“They did a great job,” Zane said of Chaminade’s offense.
