HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Chula Vista’s Streak Stays Alive in 4th-Quarter Rally

Chula Vista’s 32-game Metro Conference unbeaten streak appeared in doubt against ninth-ranked Montgomery, but the Spartans scored twice in the final 3 minutes 3 seconds and upset visiting Montgomery, 17-6, Friday night.

With the victory, Chula Vista improved to 31-0-2 in its last 33 league games, including two victories this season.

Dave Hatts, a Chula Vista assistant coach, said he didn’t consider the victory an upset.

“We certainly took notice when (Montgomery) beat Castle Park last week,” Hatts said. “The general public may have felt we were the underdog, but when you’ve won four league titles in a row, we didn’t consider ourselves the underdog.”

Chula Vista (3-1-1 overall) trailed, 6-3, until running back Jacob Lewis (11 rushes for 67 yards) broke off right tackle and went 34 yards to give the Spartans a 10-6 lead. While Montgomery was driving, Chula Vista’s Jermaine Campbell picked off an Alex Palacio pass and ran 55 yards with the game-clinching touchdown.

The Spartans took the opening kickoff 70 yards in 13 plays. Kevin Brennan’s 20-yard field capped the drive. Montgomery (2-2-1, 1-1) took its 6-3 lead on Torey Paris’ 18-yard run with 6:19 remaining in the fourth quarter.

In other Metro games:

Bonita Vista 25, Castle Park 6--Junior Brian Melancon rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns--giving him 391 yards the past two weeks--to lift Bonita Vista (4-1, 2-0).

Anthony Davis, the standout running back for Castle Park (3-2, 0-2), left the game in the second quarter after a defender grabbed his face mask while making a tackle. Davis, who spent the remainder of the game on the sidelines wearing a neck brace, had carried eight times for 31 yards. Davis entered the game as the county’s leading rusher with 713 yards.

Forced to rely on the passing game, Trojan quarterback Moses Moreno was six for 22 for 164 yards, including a fourth-quarter touchdown to Benji Collins. But Moreno was sacked six times.

Southwest 47, Hilltop 7--O’Brian Woods was 13 for 26 for 245 yards and four touchdowns for Southwest (4-1, 2-0). Teammate Damien Washington rushed for 91 yards on 15 carries, including touchdown runs of one- and five-yards and Johnny Cotton caught four passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Hilltop fell to 0-5, 0-2.

Avocado League

Carlsbad 29, San Marcos 7--Matt Olney busted for two touchdowns and Eric Garcia ran for one and passed for another for visiting Carlsbad (2-3, 1-1). Olney’s touchdown runs were for two and 50, and Garcia ran for a two-yard touchdown and hit Robert Knight with a 46-yard touchdown pass. San Marcos (0-4-1, 0-2) scored on the last play of the game to avoid its first shutout of the season.

San Pasqual 35, Oceanside 19--Fourth-ranked San Pasqual (5-0, 2-0) fell behind 12-0, then went to the ground and beat Oceanside (2-3, 1-1). The Eagles rushed for 379 yards in only 31 plays; they did not attempt a pass. Halfback Jamon Buggs led the way with 13 rushes for 160 yards and three touchdowns, and wingback DeSale Wallace added 161 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

Oceanside quarterback John Portugal completed 21 of 30 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Aaron Durley caught 11 of Portugal’s passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

El Camino 26, Escondido 0--The three-time defending 2-A champion Wildcats (4-1, 1-1) had their highest scoring night of the season. Josh Johnson kicked field goals of 25 and 22 yards. Mike Booker added touchdown runs of two and 11 yards. Harmon Gordon also scored on a three-yard run. The Cougars are 1-4, 1-1.

Palomar League

Mt. Carmel 28, Rancho Buena Vista 10--The Sundevils (3-1-1, 2-0) scored 21 points in the first quarter and capped the game with a San Diego Section record-tying 99-yard pass from Damian Dolan to Anthony Mamaril.

Quarterback Dolan completed five of 11 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Marlin Carey carried 17 times for 133 yards, including scoring runs of 32 and 49 yards. Dolan’s 42-yard pass to Jason Payne opened the scoring. RBV fell to 1-4, 0-2, losing for the 11 time in its last 17 games.

Vista 27, Orange Glen 7--Safety Chris Martinez scored on a 35-yard interception return for Vista (4-1, 2-0). Quarterback Bryan Cox was seven of 11 for 71 yards, including a touchdown. Orange Glen fell to 2-3, 0-2.

Rancho Bernardo 17, San Dieguito 14--Kevin Kaufman’s 42 yard-field goal with three minutes left in the game gave Rancho Bernardo (4-1, 1-1) the victory. San Dieguito fell to 2-3, 0-2.

Nonleague

Coronado 22, Laguna Beach 21--In his first start at quarterback, Scott Cole led Coronado (2-3) to a dramatic victory over visiting Laguna Beach (1-4). Coronado’s offense hadn’t scored a touchdown in three weeks, but Cole led the Islanders to two fourth-quarter touchdowns and running back Sean Sadler (67 yards in 11 carries) scored the game-winning two-point conversion with 16 seconds to play.

After Cole connected with tight end Travis Powell for a 16-yard touchdown pass play to pull Coronado to 21-20, the Islanders were penalized for delay of game and had to start their conversion on the eight-yard line. No problem. Sadler went left, broke two tackles and crossed the goal line with tacklers on his back.

Clairemont 21, Hoover 12--These teams had combined for eight losses going into this one. But after playing to 6-6 at halftime, Clairemont scored twice in the fourth quarter to move to 1-4. Peter Soukthavong was eight for 13 passing for 181 yards, including touchdown passes of 90 yards to Demitrius Gibson and 18 yards to Beto Gonzalez. Brian White scored the other touchdown for Clairemont on a 10-yard run for Clairemont. Hoover is 0-5.

Kearny 17, Mira Mesa 7--James Curtis, who was the county’s No. 2 rusher going in, romped 47 yards and 27 yards for touchdowns as the Komets improved to 4-1. Kearny had 244 rushing yards on 35 carries, Curtis did most of the damage with 208 yards on 26 carries. The Marauders (2-3), who lost to a City Western League team for the second week in a row, had 171 yards of total offense.

Curtis has 905 yards 111 carries with nine touchdowns. He averages 181 yards per game, 8.12 per carry. The Komet defense was sparked by linebacker Rashad Wright’s three sacks and interceptions by Kenny Junious and Darious Gleaton.

Helix 10, Santana 0--Top-ranked Helix recorded its third consecutive shutout. Running back Teneil Ethridge rushed 20 times for 157 yards, including a touchdown run of five yards. Helix (5-0) had 259 yards rushing and held Santana (2-3) to 80 total yards.

USDHS 27, Serra 21--Fullback Brady Walker rushed 22 times for 107 yards and scored twice for USDHS (2-3). Junior quarterback Josh Merrill, in his first varsity start, was eight for 13 for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Serra fumbled five times, lost them all and was penalized 101 yards in penalties. For the Conquistadors (1-4), Lovell Swink rushed seven times for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and Dwayne Vincent tied a school record with 18 tackles.

San Diego 12, Patrick Henry 0--Parnel Jones scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter and Rodney Jones on a 35-yarder in the fourth quarter as San Diego (3-2) defeated Patrick Henry (2-3) for the first time since 1972. This was the Cavers second shutout of the season.

St. Augustine 27, Crawford 13--Long touchdown passes were the order of the day as St. Augustine remained undefeated after five games. After Crawford’s Dominic Mossler hit Michael Bell on an 84-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, St. Augustine’s Aaron Buckner responded with an 83-yard scoring pass to Jonathon Santos.

In the third quarter, Buckner (17-for-37, 217 yards) hit Sal Navarra on an 82-yard scoring pass, and Crawford (2-3) retaliated with a 93-yard scoring play from Mossler (10 for 21, 211 yards) to Bell. Chris Sovay (20-yard run) and Gustavo Villafana (30-yard interception return) settled the score for the Saints (5-0).

El Capitan 33, Mt. Miguel 6--Quarterback Bob Vickery led eighth-ranked El Capitan to 349 yards of offense, rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 11 attempts. Fullback James Hopkins added 105 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and wingback Greg Ryan had 80 yards and two touchdowns on only five rushes.

Grossmont 49, El Cajon Valley 14--The underdog Braves (2-3) actually led, 7-0, after the first quarter on Quentin Collins’ 10-yard run. But Grossmont (4-1) quickly restored order in the second quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points. The Foothillers tacked on 14 in each the third and fourth quarters.

Juan Nodal rushed for 144 yards on 15 carries and scored on runs of three and 13 yards. Adam Villaescusa rushed for 169 yards on 20 carries.

Calipatria 27, Santa Fe Christian 3--The Eagles only scoring came on a 51-yard field goal by Steve Lapetz. Danny Padilla scored two touchdowns on runs of eight and seven yards to lift Calipatria (4-1).

Eight-Man

Brentwood 62, Francis Parker 31--Senior quarterback Scott Schneider was 25 of 52 for 368 yards and threw five touchdowns, giving him 25 for the year, but Francis Parker (2-3) still lost.
