Dang’s Status is Fair

Vu Dang, an Escondido High senior who was injured in a football game 11 days ago, was transferred to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas on Monday, and his condition was listed as fair, said a spokeswoman at the Palomar Medical Center said.

Dang sustained a severe head injury in the Cougars’ Oct. 2 game at San Marcos, and he underwent surgery to have a subdural hematoma (a blood clot between the brain and skull) later that night at the Palomar Medical Center.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Antje Fritschi of Grossmont College won the women’s Community College Division singles and doubles championship at the Rolex Intercollegiate tournament at Long Beach City College.

Fritschi, a sophomore, defeated Moe Patton of Santa Barbara, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, for the singles title. Fritschi then teamed with Marni Hunt to win the doubles, 6-3, 6-4, over Michelle Mateljan and Amy DiPaolo of Riverside.

Fritschi and Hunt advanced to a regional Rolex tournament at Corpus Christi, Tex., Oct. 22-23.

SOCCER

Ex-Socker Victor Noguiera, a former most valuable player in the defunct Major Soccer League, has signed a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Wave of the National Professional Soccer League. Terms were not disclosed.

Dawn Birdsall scored an unassisted goal at 59:13 to give the University of San Diego women’s team a 1-0 nonconference victory over host San Francisco, snapping a five-match losing streak for the Toreros (4-8). The Dons are 4-9.

Kelly Cramer and Carin Pugh scored to lift visiting UC San Diego to a 2-0 victory over Cal Baptist (6-6). Mandy Johnson and Jodie Robertson recorded the assists for the Tritons (7-2-1).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Gracie Schutt had 23 kills and Kori Ermigarat 12 as San Diego State defeated William & Mary, 15-2, 13-15, 15-12, 15-2, at Peterson Gym. Pam Hope had 46 of 54 assists for the Aztecs (15-4). William & Mary is 11-8.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Cynthia Navis of Solana Beach shot rounds of 88 and 83 and failed to qualify for match play in the sixth U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship on the 5,770-yard, par-72 Old Marsh Golf Club course at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The cut was 164, seven strokes lower than Navis’ total.
