Bumbling Poly Loses Five Fumbles, Paving Way for Grant’s First Win, 10-6

Heavily favored Poly High handed a 10-6 decision to previously winless Grant by losing five fumbles Friday afternoon at Grant in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Both of Grant’s scores followed Poly turnovers. A fumble by Ron Botley at the Grant 41-yard line in the second quarter led to a 24-yard field goal by Aaron Kauffman that gave Grant a 3-0 lead.

Grant (1-4-1, 1-2 in league play) kept the drive alive when Sandro Perez ran 19 yards on a fake punt on a fourth-and-17 play from the Grant 34.

On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Poly quarterback Anthony Muse fumbled at the Poly 30 to set up Grant’s only touchdown, a one-yard run by quarterback Raymond Singleton.

Poly (4-2, 1-2) threatened to score toward the end of the first half, driving to the Grant four, but time expired.

Grant running back Roy Rodriguez gained 128 yards in 20 carries.

Poly’s only points came in the fourth quarter when Muse, trying to pass, scrambled and ran 79 yards for a touchdown. Muse led Poly with 116 yards in seven carries. Botley gained 50 yards in 14 carries.
