SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It was like raising a red flag before a bull--or in this case, a Bulldog.

Fired up by a stunt in which Roosevelt sent a plane to buzz Garfield’s pre-game rally, the Bulldogs came into East Los Angeles College with revenge in mind Friday night. They got it, earning a 14-0 victory over the Roughriders before 22,000 fans in the 57th East Los Angeles Classic.

“The airplane was all the motivation we needed,” Garfield coach Steve Robinson said. “They sent a plane to fly above our school during our pep rally that said, ‘Go Riders, Beat Bulldogs.’ ”

Garfield was led by the combined efforts of tailback Armando Figueroa and fullback Ernie Manzo. Manzo rushed for 75 yards in eight carries and scored on a 28-yard run in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs all the scoring they needed. Figueroa did the dirty work, carrying 27 times for 142 yards.

“I owe it all to my offensive line,” Figueroa said. “They busted their (butts). I just ran to the holes.”

Garfield added an insurance touchdown with 4:40 left. Quarterback David Villalobos handed off to Braulio De La Torre, who passed back to Villalobos for a three-yard touchdown. It was the only pass Garfield completed in the game.

Roosevelt had trouble moving the ball throughout the game against the bigger and stronger Garfield defensive line.

“We couldn’t run-block, which destroyed our timing on offense,” Roosevelt coach David Endow said. “We had a couple of opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize.”

Roughrider quarterback Frank Madrid completed 10 of 22 passes for 70 yards, and scrambled 13 times for 32 yards. Running back James Sanchez had six carries for 32 yards.

“They were bigger and stronger, which we face every year,” Endow said. “They’re a better team, and they deserved to win.”

Figueroa figured in 14 of the Bulldogs’ 20 plays in the first half. But Manzo put the points on the board, running 28 yards untouched down the right sideline on the third play of the Bulldogs’ first possession.

Garfield’s Villalobos threw only one pass in the first half, and it fell incomplete.

The stadium at East L.A. College reached its capacity of 22,000 shortly before kickoff and an overflow of about 2,000 watched the game from behind a chain-link fence high above the east end zone. The game was interrupted with 2:47 left when hundreds of fans emptied from both sides of the bleachers.

The Classic was the homecoming game for both schools and was highlighted by pre-game reunions, dances, dinners and rallies.

Garfield and Roosevelt both saw their records changed to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference. The Roughriders lead the East Los Angeles Classic series 29-22-6.

Friday night’s Classic may be the last played at East L.A. College. Organizers are talking about moving the game to the Rose Bowl.
