ROUNDUP : Camarillo Gangs Up on Marmonte Foes

The Camarillo High boys’ cross-country team put on an impressive display of close-knit running to dominate a Marmonte League meet Thursday against Royal and Simi Valley at Camarillo Grove Park.

The Scorpions, the No. 6-ranked team in the Southern Section Division II poll, placed six runners among the top seven finishers to defeat Royal, 17-46, and Simi Valley, 20-43. Simi Valley beat Royal, 20-43.

Junior Ben Hill (16 minutes 37 seconds over the three-mile course), senior McRay Bryson (16:37) and sophomore Jeremy Park (16:38) finished first, second and third for Camarillo, narrowly holding off Royal senior Chad Cook (16:38).

Seniors Kevin Culwell (16:40) and Miguel Ortega (16:40) placed fifth and sixth for Camarillo (6-2, 5-2 in league matches). Sophomore teammate Eleazar Hernandez was seventh in 16:47.

In other boys’ meets:

Agoura 17, Channel Islands 43; Agoura 15, Westlake 50; Channel Islands 15, Westlake 48--Ryan Wilson, John Greene and Emanuel Azizi had identical times of 16:52 over the three-mile course to finish first, second and third for host Agoura in the Marmonte League meet. The win gives the Chargers a 6-1 record in league play and a second-place finish in the dual-meet standings behind Thousand Oaks (7-0).

Birmingham 15, Van Nuys 40--Alvaro Mejia, the defending City Section champion, timed 16:03 over the three-mile course at Pierce College to lead a five-man Birmingham sweep.

Jose Torres placed second in 16:04 for the Braves (3-0, 3-0), and Stuart Pattle was third in 16:21.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Agoura 16, Channel Islands 43; Agoura 15, Westlake 50; Channel Islands 15, Westlake 45--The host Chargers, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, cruised to victory in the Marmonte League meet by placing five runners in the top six.

Kristie Camp and Alison Kaz both timed 20:42 over the three-mile course for Agoura (7-0, 7-0), with Kay Nekota and Tiffany Burt third and fourth in 20:43.

Birmingham 15, Van Nuys 47--Sophomore Roseanna Heagerty timed 19:20 over the three-mile course at Pierce College to lead Birmingham (3-0, 3-0) to victory in the Mid-Valley League meet.

Heagerty narrowly missed her school record of 19:17, which she set last week.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Saugus d. Canyon, 5-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-13, 15-5--Host Saugus, ranked fourth in the Southern Section 3-A Division, upset second-ranked Canyon and moved into sole possession of first place in the Foothill League. Saugus (8-1, 6-1) was led by Lindsay Estes (14 kills) and Jodi Olsby (44 assists).

Royal d. Newbury Park, 15-12, 15-9, 15-11--Sisters Teri and Jill Enright had 13 and eight kills as visiting Royal kept alive its playoff hopes with a win in the Marmonte League match. Aimee Moon had 24 assists for Royal (7-5, 6-4).

Tracy Little had a team-high 12 kills for Newbury Park (6-7, 4-6).

Nordhoff d. Calabasas, 15-1, 15-1, 15-1--Sami Sawyer scored all 15 points from the service line in the third game and 21 for the match to lead the host Rangers (11-0, 5-0) to a Frontier League victory over Calabasas.

Sawyer had nine aces and Alison Nofrey added 10 kills for Nordhoff.

Chatsworth d. Kennedy, 15-1, 15-2, 15-3--Rose Pasag paced the attack with seven kills as Chatsworth (9-1, 7-0) stayed in first place in the Northwest Valley Conference with a sweep. Kennedy fell to 2-5 in conference play.

El Camino Real d. Cleveland, 11-15, 15-5, 15-6, 15-11--Jessica Dinaberg came through with 32 kills, eight aces and seven blocks to lead the Conquistadores (7-2, 5-1) to a Northwest Valley Conference win.

Cleveland (4-5, 2-5) was paced by strong hitting from Michelle Diana throughout the match and solid defense in the first game, but could not hold up to the offensive pressure of Dinaberg and Samantha Small, who had 14 kills.

L.A. Baptist d. Maranatha, 13-15, 16-14, 15-10, 15-10--Sarah Rameson had 24 kills, three blocks and three aces and the Knights (11-0, 5-0) closed in on their fifth straight Alpha League title. It was the 24th straight league win for L.A. Baptist, which leads by two matches with three to play.

La Reina d. Bishop Diego, 15-6, 15-0, 15-6--Middle blocker Amy Gusick led the attack with nine kills and the host Regents (10-2, 6-0) served at a 97% efficiency rate to retain first place in the Tri-Valley League. Christy Potts added seven kills for La Reina.

Viewpoint d. South Bay Lutheran, 15-8, 15-0, 15-5--Debbie Little had nine kills and Viewpoint (11-2, 8-1) stayed in contention for a Heritage League title with a sweep. Viewpoint plays at First Lutheran (9-0) Tuesday in a first-place showdown.

Montclair Prep d. Western Christian, 15-2, 15-7, 15-12--Dana Bennish had a match-high 20 kills and teammate Kendra Dousette added 13 for Montclair Prep (9-1)in the nonleague match at home.

Taft d. Reseda, 15-3, 15-3, 16-14--Darcie Hayes had six kills and Lauren Parish keyed the defense with nine digs for visiting Taft (6-4, 4-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference win.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Master’s College d. La Sierra University, 15-6, 15-12, 15-7--Kristen Helgeson paced a strong defensive performance with four solo blocks and added five kills to guide the Mustangs (11-14) to a nondistrict win.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Nordhoff 12, Calabasas 9--David Ford, the leading scorer in Ventura County, scored five goals to raise his season total to 87 as Nordhoff (10-11, 4-0) clinched the Frontier League championship.
