Point Loma 17, Mira Mesa 3--Point Loma handed Mira Mesa (2-5, 0-2) its fifth consecutive loss, marking the first time the Marauders have lost five games in a season since going 1-8 in 1981. Rantie Harper (16 carries, 54 yards) scored on an eight-yard run, Jose Fernandez kicked a 32-yard field goal and Jacques Ballard returned an interception 46 yards to provide the scoring for the Pointers (4-3, 1-0). Brett Hall’s fourth-quarter 22-yard field goal kept Point Loma from its second shutout. Point Loma’s defensive standouts included Jamie Crossley (nine tackles), Rashad Lewis (five tackles, one forced fumble) and Travis White, Clint Kugler and Ballard, who each had an interception.

City Central League

Lincoln 13, San Diego 6--Vashon Simms and Rashee Johnson each had an interception to thwart fourth-quarter drives by the Cavers (4-3, 1-1). Lincoln got all the points it needed in the second quarter. Johnson scored on an 11-yard pass from Akili Smith, then Smith scored on a 29-yard run. John Espinal hauled in a 21-yard scoring pass from Rodney Jones to pull to 13-6 with 7:55 left in the third quarter, but the Cavers could muster little offense after that.

Crawford 10, Madison 0--Michael Bell scored on an 80-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach for Crawford (4-3, 2-0). Larry Haley had 24-yard field goal. Crawford also made things difficult for Madison (2-5, 0-3) with eight quarterback sacks.

Serra 35, Hoover 22--Serra sophomore Lovell Swink rushed six times for 215 yards, on carries of 80 (for a touchdown), 68, 12, 51, 1 and 13 yards, and he also had a 38-yard kickoff return. Also for Serra (2-5, 2-1), Lamont Kyle returned the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown, and Billy Dill rushed five times for 97 yards and a touchdown. Javier Morgan rushed 14 times for 83 yards and a touchdown. Serra gained 423 yards, 399 on the ground. Ron Hale rushed for three touchdowns, of 23, 14 and 12 yards for Hoover (0-7, 0-2).

City Western League

University City 32, La Jolla 0--No. 9 University City (7-0, 3-0) pitched its sixth shutout and rolled up 301 total yards, all rushing. Paul Turner carried 12 times for 115 of those yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Daranzol Sheppard did not complete a pass in three attempts but rushed eight times for 82 yards. Greg Russell added to the ground attack with a 50-yard touchdown sprint, and Reggie Ronque scored from six yards. Jason Green had 67 rushing yards for La Jolla (1-5-1, 0-1-1), which had 190 total yards, 117 rushing.

Kearny 35, USDHS 7--The Komets (6-1, 1-0) proved they have more weapons than county rushing leader James Curtis. Curtis rushed for 134 yards on 17 carries, including a 58-yard touchdown, but let his teammates do the rest. Junior Wayne Everett, in his first game, scored on a 20-yard run and a 27-yard pass from Sam Norris. Everett also had an interception. Norris threw two touchdowns and scored on a seven-yard run. Kearny held the Dons (2-5, 0-2), who were tied at halftime, 7-7, to 81 yards total offense, including minus-four rushing yards on 18 carries.

Avocado League

Ramona 14, San Marcos 8--Jason Thornton scored on a 19-yard run--only the second touchdown of the year for Ramona (1-6, 1-4)--and Josh Stewart caught a 14-yard scoring pass from J.D. Sullivan. Justin Matsushita caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Daniel Anderson as San Marcos (0-6-1, 0-4) mounted a late rally.

El Camino 14, Oceanside 7--No. 3 El Camino (6-1, 3-1) trailed, 7-0, after the first quarter but came back on two Trey Crayton touchdown passes to James Naotala (31 yards) and Seth Morrison (28 yards). Oceanside (2-4, 2-2) was held to 110 total yards. Sixty-one of those came on a John Portugal touchdown pass to George Sutton.

Carlsbad 26, Escondido 7--Matt Olney ran for two touchdowns to lead the Lancers (3-4, 2-2). Mike Frank scored on a 10-yard pass for Escondido (1-6, 1-3).

Grossmont 2-A League

El Capitan 35, West Hills 7--James Hopkins ran wild for the eighth-ranked Vaqueros (6-1, 1-0) tallying 201 yards on 17 carries, including touchdown runs of 27, 64, 1 and 1 yards. Greg Ryan added 88 rushing yards in 10 attempts. Ryan also had an interception and blocked a field goal, which could have given the Wolf Pack (2-5, 1-1) a 10-7 halftime lead. El Capitan quarterback Bobby Vickery completed three of five passes for 65 yards and one touchdown, giving the Vaqueros 415 total yards. Josh Cook (42-yard touchdown pass) and Barry Fitzgerald hooked up for West Hills’ only score.

Metro Conference

Bonita Vista 20, Hilltop 0--Brian Melancon, coming off a sprained ankle last week, rushed 20 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns, and Oscar Johnson added 101 yards in 16 carries to lead the Barons (5-2, 3-1). Terry Battle had 21 carries for 129 for the Lancers (0-7, 0-4). Scott Shields and Netzer Ruperto each had an interception for Bonita Vista.

Chula Vista 45, Mar Vista 6--The Spartans cruised to a 31-0 halftime lead and didn’t yield the Mariner touchdown until 1:04 remained. Chula Vista (5-1-1, 4-0) had 306 total yards, led by Jacob Lewis’ 73 rushing yards on 11 carries. Rick Haley added 70 yards on eight carries, including four- and 39-yard scoring runs. Mar Vista (2-5, 0-4) had three turnovers, all leading to scores. Albert Mendivil returned a fumble 21 yards for a touchdown and returned an interception 31 yards to set up another.

Palomar League

Orange Glen 23, Fallbrook 7--In the battle of two of the county’s leading quarterbacks, Brady Batten completed nine of 14 passes for 162 yards to lift Orange Glen (4-3, 2-2) to an upset of No. 5 Fallbrook (5-2, 2-2). Joaquin Randall rushed 29 times for 152 yards for the Patriots and scored on runs of 21 and 9 yards. Fallbrook quarterback John Dutton completed 16 of 38 passes for 218 yards and a 38-yard touchdown. He was also intercepted twice, two of six Fallbrook turnovers.

Rancho Buena Vista 14, Vista 0--Bill Pryor rushed 10 time for 139 yards, including a 75-yard run to set up the first touchdown, and also scored to lift Rancho Buena Vista (2-5, 1-3) to the upset of No. 7 Vista (4-3, 2-2). Lee Johnson scored on a five-yard run, and Pryor scored from the one. Vista rushed for 220 yards and denied Vista Coach Dick Haines his second attempt at his 309th career victory, which would move him alone into 10th place on the all-time national victory list. Vista was at the RBV one-yard line with six minutes remaining, but fumbled. It was recovered by linebacker Gary Cababa.

Rancho Bernardo at Poway--The first meeting between the two neighboring schools was postponed until 3 p.m. today because of a power outage at Poway.

Coastal League

Julian 46, Borrego 19--The Eagles piled up 309 rushing yards on 33 carries, and, after a 6-6 first quarter, outscored the Rams, 18-0, in the second. Anthony Howard led the attack with 126 yards on 14 carries, including scoring runs of four and 46 yards. Frankie Stewart (11 carries, 89 yards, one touchdown) and Cory Burnett (five carries, 89 yards, two touchdowns) were also productive. Jason Schwenk had seven tackles and a fumble recovery for Julian (5-1, 1-1). Sean O’Brien contributed 101 all-purpose yards for the Rams (1-5, 0-2).

Nonleague

Helix 35, Valhalla 0--Teneil Ethridge and top-ranked Helix (7-0) made easy work of Valhalla (2-5). Ethridge, a junior tailback, rushed 12 times for 122 yards and four touchdowns. Helix’s other score was a 95-yard kickoff return by Keith Harrison following a lateral from Chris Baker. In recording its fourth shutout, Helix limited the Norsemen to 125 total yards.

Coronado 14, Mission Bay 7--The Islanders (4-3) played error-free and came up with the most crucial of three Buccaneer turnovers with 1:04 remaining. With Mission Bay (4-2-1) facing second down at the Coronado 14, quarterback Steve Vincent’s pass was tipped by Chris Franks and intercepted by Mark Hammel. Chad Walery rushed 22 times for 123 yard and both Islander touchdowns on runs of seven and 22 yards. The Bucs have not won in three weeks.
