Amateur Golfers Rolls to Big Lead Over Pros in Century Club Matches

The amateur golfers, on the strength of a 9-0 victory by Tom Kroll and Victor Zayas, lead the professionals, 31 1/2-13 1/2, Saturday after one day of the Century Club Matches at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista.

Scholl, of Fairbanks Ranch, defeated Joe DeBrock of Torrey Pines Golf Club and Bob Madsen of Singing Hills Country Club. Gary Griggs of Stardust Country Club and Justin King of Torrey Pines Golf Club provided the professionals with their only victory, 6-3, over Marcus Maloane of Coronado Golf Club and Gordon Jenkins of El Camino Country Club.

The final round will be played today. The amateurs have won five of the last eight matches and the 20-year series is tied at 10-10.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Fresno Pacific, 15-13, 14-16, 15-12, 15-10, as Roberta Smith had 14 kills and three blocks in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Terilyn Walker also had 14 kills. PLNC is 14-6, 6-3; Fresno Pacific is 23-11, 6-4

In a rematch of last year’s Division III finals, Washington (Mo.) University defeated 14th-ranked UC San Diego, 15-10, 15-10, 15-12 to win the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis. UCSD (9-15 overall, 9-5 vs. Division III) was led by junior Laura Kranz, who had 14 kills, and sophomore Julie Harvey, who had 10. Both made the all-tournament team. Earlier in the day, UCSD defeated 10th-ranked College of St. Benedict (Minn.), 15-5, 15-8, 9-15, 15-9, to go undefeated in pool play.

Santa Clara (16-7, 8-0) remained atop the West Coast Conference with a 15-10, 15-12, 17-15 victory at University of San Diego (14-10, 4-3). Jennifer Wrightson led the Toreros with 18 kills and Nikki Wallace had 11.

MEN’S SOCCER

UCSD’s Jeff Klein scored at 71 minutes to give the Tritons (8-6-3) the nonconference victory over PLNC (4-8-1).

Klein had a corner kick and was credited with the goal when a PLNC player headed the ball into the net. The shutout went to goalkeeper Michael Madden, who had four saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Fourth-ranked Portland toppled host USD, 4-0, as Portland (15-1-0, 3-0-0) got goals from four players. Goalie Erin Fahey needed only three saves for the shutout as USD fell to 5-9-0, 0-3-0.

WATER POLO

UC San Diego split two games at the 49er Invitational in Long Beach. The eighth-seeded Tritons defeated ninth-seeded Long Beach State, 11-10, in overtime behind five goals by Mike Nalu. UCSD was then beaten by top-seeded California, 13-4.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Robert Keter won his fourth invitational of the season, the Bronco Invitational at Cal Poly Pomona, to lead PLNC to a team victory in the men’s race. PLNC (68 points) and San Diego State (132) finished 1-2 in the 16-team, 5-mile race. Keter (24:06), a junior from Kenya, defeated defending champion Sasha Vujic of Cal State Northridge by four seconds. He dropped 27 seconds off his time from last year despite the course being 100 yards longer. PLNC’s Bryan Wallbank of Hilltop and SDSU’s Jim Swinson finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

The PLNC women finished seventh and SDSU 10th. The best local finisher was former Rancho Buena Vista High runner Kira Jorgensen, who was seventh for UCLA. PLNC’s Lupe Ambriz was ninth.

FOOTBALL

Nathan Vail kicked a 22-yard field goal and Robert Hamilton rushed for 79 yards on 21 carries, but it wasn’t enough as Grossmont dropped a 15-10 Mission Conference decision to visiting Golden West.

Chad De Grenier completed 20 of 36 passes for 233 yards and also rushed for a touchdown for Grossmont (0-5-1, 0-5).

Martin Arispe (El Camino High) and Greg Frazier (Oceanside) had interception returns for touchdowns, and Tom Luginbill completed 15 of 20 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns to lead Palomar College (5-1, 4-1) to a 45-26 Mission Conference victory over Rancho Santiago.
