PREP ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Christian Wins Title

Capistrano Valley Christian, top-ranked in Southern Section Division V, defeated St. Margaret’s, 15-6, in the championship game of the Brentwood Classic girls’ volleyball tournament Saturday at Brentwood.

Tournament MVP Karen Benkovsky had 50 kills in the tournament to lead the Eagles (10-0). Teammates Kathleen Bunce and Heidi Elliott also earned all-tournament honors.

Susie Teitsworth had 31 kills in the tournament for St. Margaret’s (9-1), top-ranked in Division VI. Capistrano Valley Christian defeated St. Margaret’s, 15-12, 15-4, during pool play earlier in the tournament.

In nonleague eight-man football:

Arrowhead Christian 64, Liberty Christian 36--Liberty Christian quarterback Carl Warmack completed five passes for 178 yards but threw one that was intercepted and was sacked five times. Gabe Baltodano rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns in 16 carries for Liberty Christian (5-1, 2-0).

Quarterback Mark Naylor passed for 177 yards and three touchdowns for visiting Arrowhead Christian.

Canoga Park Faith Baptist 57, Capistrano Valley Christian 16--Judd Granzow passed for three touchdowns and 167 yards to lead Faith Baptist.

Marquis Patterson rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries for Capistrano Valley Christian (1-5, 1-3).

In the La Quinta water polo tournament:

Fountain Valley 20, San Dimas 5--Robert Causee scored six goals and Ofer Horn added five for Fountain Valley (17-4) in the championship game. Causee also had two goals in a 6-5 semifinal victory over Ocean View.

In Orange League water polo:

Valencia 13, Western 7--Joe Ma scored seven goals and Scott Liddicoat had four for host Valencia (11-5, 3-2 in league).

In nonleague water polo:

Costa Mesa 5, Marina 4--John Naigle scored the game-winning goal with 2:18 remaining in sudden death for host Costa Mesa, ranked second in Southern Section Division III.

J.R. Porter and Sam Grayeli each had two goals for host Costa Mesa (16-6). Clay Cornhall had eight saves for Marina (15-7), ranked second in Division II.

Capistrano Valley 13, Los Alamitos 3--Jake Yokota scored six goals, and Jeremy Braxton-Brown had three for host Capistrano Valley (20-2), ranked No. 1 in Orange County.

Long Beach Wilson 14, Corona del Mar 13--Ben Blaber scored the deciding goal with one minute remaining for Long Beach Wilson. Brian Codori, Brad Harrington, Crosby Grant and James Palda each scored three goals for host Corona del Mar (13-6, 5-0), ranked fourth in the county.
