PREP ROUNDUP : Cougars Prevail in Four Overtimes

It took four overtime periods to settle matters between Capistrano Valley and San Clemente Thursday.

Capistrano Valley finally prevailed with one second left in the third sudden-death overtime period. The Cougars won, 11-10, at San Clemente when Brian Myer scored on a cross-cage shot from about 26 feet out.

With the victory, Capistrano Valley (22-2, 3-1 in league), ranked second in Orange County, probably wrapped up second place in the league and possibly the second seed in the Southern Section Division I playoffs. No. 3 San Clemente (12-7, 2-2) will likely finish third. The Cougars finish the league season next week against Mission Viejo; the Tritons play Mater Dei.

After Capistrano Valley holeman Jeremy Braxton-Brown tied the score, 10-10, on a reverse shot with 21 seconds left in the first overtime, both defenses cracked down and neither team scored in two three-minute sudden-death periods.

Stephen Thornton, the Capistrano Valley goalkeeper, and Gabe Gardner, the San Clemente goalie, each stopped numerous shots that would have ended the match. Thornton finished with 15 saves; Gardner had 13.

San Clemente’s Jeff Suckiel sent the match into the first overtime by scoring a man-advantage goal with 23 seconds left in regulation.
