Camarillo Slogs Past Royal, 10-0

Fahali Campbell and Lee Ciuffitelli have done most of the scoring this season for Camarillo High.

So, it was no surprise when Campbell and Ciuffitelli accounted for all of the Scorpions’ points in a hard-fought, 10-0 Marmonte League victory over Royal on Friday night at Camarillo.

Campbell, a senior tailback and the area’s leading rusher, gained 142 yards in 37 carries and scored the only touchdown with 4 minutes 18 seconds to play on a four-yard run.

Ciuffitelli, a senior and one of the area’s top kickers, booted a 20-yard field goal to break a scoreless tie in the third quarter, then added the PAT on Campbell’s touchdown.

Ciuffitelli’s field goal was his ninth of the season and the four points raised his season scoring total to 45 points.

On several carries Campbell appeared to be off to the races, only to slip and fall on the slick field. Still, he raised his season totals to 1,464 yards and 13 touchdowns.

“This field gets really slippery when it gets wet,” Campbell said. “It was a problem. You might as well be running on ice.”

Ciuffitelli attributed an unsuccessful 52-yard field-goal attempt in the final minute of the first half to the less-than-ideal conditions.

“The holder said he got a bunch of mud flying up in his face,” Ciuffitelli said.

Ciuffitelli’s successful kick, which capped an eight-minute drive by Camarillo (6-2, 4-1 in league play) to open the second half, was perfect.

Royal (3-5, 2-3) managed only 78 yards in offense. Camarillo totaled 181. The teams combined for 210 yards in penalties, including 120 by Royal.

The teams combined for 140 yards in penalties in a scoreless first half. Seven penalties went for 15 yards each, including two for grabbing the face mask, one against each team. Camarillo gained 94 yards in the first half, 67 on the ground by Campbell, but was penalized for 80 yards.

Royal’s only scoring threat came midway through the second quarter when the Highlanders drove to the Camarillo 21. Ryan Joyce, though, made an interception in the end zone.

With 48 seconds left in the half, Ciuffitelli’s 52-yard attempt with a slight wind at his back fell short by a few yards.
