Sunny Hills Starts Slowly, Wins Big

Share

Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney was a little worried when the first quarter ended Friday night.

Sonora had held his team scoreless for the first quarter. That didn’t last long though. The Lancers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and went on to a 33-0 victory over the Raiders at La Habra High School.

The victory kept Sunny Hills (7-1) undefeated in the Freeway League at 3-0. Sonora is 3-5, 1-2 in league.

“This was a nice win for us,” Devaney said. “The one thing I was real pleased with was that we didn’t turn the ball over tonight.”

Another aspect of the game that Devaney was pleased with was the performance of quarterback Bobby Sunderland. The senior was 13 of 19 for 218 yards and two touchdowns.

The first touchdown pass that Sunderland threw came with 3 minutes 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter, when he hooked up with senior Brian Willmer for a 37-yard pass play.

The combination of Sunderland and Willmer struck again in the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass play that put the game out of reach.

Running back Jacob Cuccia also scored two touchdowns for Sunny Hills--one on a one-yard dive into the end zone and the other on a 16-yard run.

“They are as good as they are advertised,” said Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen.
