A 19-year-old man was struck and killed Wednesday afternoon by a Santa Fe Railroad freight train near Yorba Linda.
The man, whose name was not released pending the notification of relatives, was struck by an eastbound train at 3:23 p.m. The incident occurred on railroad tracks next to Esperanza Road east of Imperial Highway, said Sheriff’s Lt. William Francis.
Mike Martin, spokesman for Santa Fe Railway, said: “The crew said the gentleman apparently jumped right into the path of the train. From what they could see, it looked like a deliberate attempt.”
The train was traveling at 55 m.p.h. when it struck the man. It departed from Los Angeles and was on its way to a stop in Barstow. The train, which has three locomotives and 73 freight cars, was delayed one hour and 42 minutes as a result of the accident. The man, who was reportedly alone on the tracks when the train approached, died at the scene. An investigation is underway.
