Marina Hurt by Turnovers in 25-9 Loss

Marina, betrayed by failures in areas it had excelled in all season, lost to Crescenta Valley, 25-9, in a Division II playoff game Friday night at Glendale High.

Marina (6-4-1) was hurt by three turnovers and lapses in the kicking game as Crescenta Valley took a 15-3 halftime lead. During the season, the Vikings forced 12 more turnovers than they surrendered.

Crescenta Valley (10-1) capitalized on a short Marina punt to move 39 yards in four plays and take a 7-3 lead as Erik La Com scored from 14 yards out in the first quarter. Just over four minutes later, Crescenta Valley’s Jon Berg picked up a John Marvos fumble and returned it eight yards for a 15-3 Falcon lead.

David Fielder kicked a 30-yard field goal for Crescenta Valley in the third quarter. La Com’s one yard run late in the fourth quarter completed the Crescenta Valley scoring.

Marvos, who gained 175 yards in 18 carries, scored for Marina on a nine-yard run on the final play of the game. Marty Sprong kicked his eighth field goal of the season, a 27-yarder, in the first quarter.
