OUTLOOK

In his first season at Orange Lutheran last year, Swanson led the Lancers to second place in the Olympic League, climbing from a fourth-place finish the year before. This season, some of the league coaches pick the Lancers and Brethren Christian to battle for the title. Swanson, a former professional player in three overseas countries, won’t join his counterparts in their prediction but is happy with how his team is shaping up. “I’ve got some good players back,” Swanson said. “They are still adjusting to my program, but they are looking good.” One of Swanson’s approaches is to get the players as fundamentally sound as possible before installing the offenses. Courvoisier, an all-league selection who averaged 12 points last year, and Sherman, who averaged seven, are two of the players familiar with Swanson’s program. Reed, who Swanson said is a potential all-county player, has size, one of the team’s primary needs. “We are going to have to run and pressure on defense because we don’t have any big, strong guys,” Swanson said. Because the team lacks a true center, Swanson said his offensive schemes will vary. “We’ll play with three forwards and two guards, or three guards and two forwards,” he said.
