OUTLOOK

Coming off a devastating season, the Matadors need to regain respectability and re-establish themselves in the league. Two seasons ago, Bolsa Grande finished fifth with a 6-8 record (9-14 overall). They collapsed last year. But Cardoza figures the Matadors now have one element they lacked in recent years and that he hopes will turn the team around. “We’ve got more height than we’ve had in a long time,” Cardoza said. “I’m hoping it will make us competitive in the league.” Fierro and Dienhart, both three-year varsity players, are the big guys up front. Fierro, an all-league selection, averaged 10 points, and Dienhart averaged 12. “We hope they’ll come out and lead by their actions on the floor,” Cardoza said. “We’ll try to work the ball inside to them.” Quach, the other returning starter, averaged five points from his point guard position. He’ll direct the offense again. “I believe the point guard is the most important player on the floor,” Cardoza said, “so we are giving him (Quach) a lot of responsibility.” Two players promoted from junior varsity, Briggs and Britton, lend additional size. Cardoza said the team is eager to put last year behind it. “The players are ready to prove they can win,” he said.
