Silva to Resign Boys’ Soccer Post at Simi Valley

Andy Silva, the Simi Valley High boys’ soccer coach, will make this, his 14th season at the school, his last.

Silva, 45, has guided the Pioneers to nine Marmonte League titles and berths in the Southern Section 4-A Division final in 1986 and 1990. He said he was quitting to make “a career change.”

“I wanted to finish out with the seniors and with Scott,” Silva said Thursday, referring to his son, a senior forward on the team.

Silva, who is in his first year as a teacher at cross-town rival Royal, taught ceramics at Simi Valley the past 13 years but requested a transfer in August when a teaching vacancy opened at Royal.

“We took him with open arms,” Royal Principal Dave Jackson said. “It didn’t take more than a few seconds to decide.”

Since the move, Royal Coach Kevin Corley has heard rumors that Silva will replace him next season, but Corley said he has no plans to leave.

“I’ve had people tell me that I’ve sold my house, that I’m moving in December, but I don’t know where this started,” Corley said. “I definitely plan on being back next year.”

Corley, a walk-on coach who teaches at Hillside Junior High, is in his second year as the Royal boys’ coach. His team was 17-2-2 overall last season and won the Marmonte League title. In Corley’s previous 10 years as coach of the Royal girl’s team, the Highlanders were 150-25-26 and won three league titles.

Asked if Silva would coach at Royal, Jackson said, “Nothing like that has been decided. Right now we’re not looking into anything.”
