OUTLOOK

The biggest development at Mission Viejo is Bob Minier’s departure after 13 seasons as the school’s varsity coach and the move by Reid, who has coached lower-level teams at the school for 24 years, to the top job. Luckily for Reid, he has two starters back from last season’s team, so he doesn’t have to start entirely from scratch. It’s probably too much to ask of the Diablos to make a run at the league championship, however. Mater Dei and Capistrano Valley, in that order, appear to be the class of the league, according to Reid. Don’t look for anyone to crack the Mater Dei-Capistrano Valley hold on the top spots, either. According to Reid, there are no spoilers among the league’s other four teams. Carr, an all-league point guard who averaged 14 points as a junior, is the team’s top player. “A coach on the floor,” Reid said. Denny is the other returning starter. Bayer started about half of the Diablos’ games last season. Beyond those three, Reid will count on a number of players up from the sophomore and junior varsity teams. Pedigo, a standout football player, returns to the basketball court after sitting out the 1991-92 season.
