What’s not to like about Mater Dei? Four starters are back from last season’s State Division I runner-up. So far, four players have signed letters of intent to play at Division I schools, two others are still sifting through offers and a third is headed to play at Division II UC Riverside. Is it any wonder Mater Dei appears to be a mortal lock for its second consecutive section championship? With the possible exception of a very strong Capistrano Valley team, Mater Dei looks like an overwhelming favorite to win the league title in its first season of public school league play. The Monarchs’ strength lies in their considerable depth. Many of their reserves would probably be standout starters at most any other school in the county. “We have to utilize our depth to wear people down,” McKnight said. “Some teams may have five players, but I don’t think too many can match our 10.” The Monarchs’ balance isn’t half bad either. Williams averaged 13 points, tops among returning players, and Drakeford, Simon and Wilborn added averages of close to eight points each. Sufi averaged 5.3 assists.
