BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cypress Goes On Late 22-9 Run but Still Loses to Katella

Katella High survived a late scoring flurry by Cypress and held off the Centurions, 51-50, for the championship of the La Quinta Aztec boys’ basketball tournament Friday night.

The Knights held a 14-point lead with 5:13 remaining in the game before the Centurions erupted to outscore the Knights, 22-9, and fall just one point short.

Katella (5-2) coming off a pair of overtime tournament victories, never trailed in the contest, holding Cypress to 20 points after three quarters.

Bart Boulton found his scoring touch in the final quarter, scoring 14 of the first 19 points in the period as Cypress (4-3) came back to make it close. Robby Walshe hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to move the Centurions to within one. Katella missed a free throw, but a long desperation shot by Cypress fell short, giving Katella the victory.

Nick Roditis paced the Knights with 20 points. Benny Garcia had 12 and tournament most valuable player Brian Carlson contributed nine.

Boulton finished with 18 and Tyson Weaver had 17 for Cypress.

In the La Quinta Tournament action:

Corona del Mar 55, La Quinta 47--Corona del Mar had four players score in double figures to defeat the Aztecs in the battle for third place.

Westminster 59, Estancia 47--Lac Tan had 21 points and Bobby Ishii added 16 points for Westminster (4-3) in the consolation championship.

Garden Grove 79, Torrance 70--Cornel Archer scored 20 points to pace Garden Grove to the fifth-place victory.
