HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Mustangs Win Third Baron Title

Share

Two-time defending San Diego Section girls’ soccer champion San Dieguito became the first team to win the Baron Soccer tournament in three consecutive years with a 2-1 victory over the host Barons in the title game at Bonita Vista High Saturday afternoon.

Bonita Vista (5-1) has had to settle for second against San Dieguito (5-0), not only in its own tournament the past three times, but also as runner-up in the last section championship.

San Dieguito had the sun and the wind to its back in the first half and Allie Kemp took advantage of the weather when she scored at the halfway mark for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the conditions were to the Barons’ disadvantage, but it was the Mustangs who were in trouble initially. On a long throw in for Bonita Vista, the ball bounced to within goal range, ricocheted off the head of a San Dieguito player for an “own” goal, no Baron was credited, to tie the score with eight minutes to play.

But with two minutes remaining, Ellie Johns scored the winning goal on a corner kick.

San Dieguito handled Torrey Pines, 5-1, and Bonita Vista turned back Poway, 3-2, in the semifinals.
