BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Free Throws by Maxey Give Moorpark Victory

Elijah Maxey made two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to give Moorpark College a 67-66 victory over Canyons on Friday night in the consolation final of the Cuesta men’s basketball tournament.

Maxey, who has signed with New Mexico State, led Moorpark (8-4) with 16 points.

Deshawn Harvey and Steve Tampus scored 21 and 20 points for Canyons (5-6).

In other men’s games:

The Master’s 72, Fresno Pacific 71--The Mustangs overcame a 46-33 halftime deficit to win an NAIA District 3 game. Center Emeka Okenwa paced The Master’s (3-5) with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Travis Pine added 16 points.

Oxnard 75, Harbor 70 (OT)--Forward Tony Ziuraitis scored 24 points, freshman guard Lance Fay added 17 and Oxnard (8-4) made all six of its free throws in overtime in a nonconference game at home. Art Wallace added 15 points for Oxnard, which overcame a nine-point second-half deficit.

BOYS

Parker (Ariz.) 66, Providence 55--Barry Dabbaghian scored 24 points for Providence in the third-place game of the Parker tournament. Dabbaghian, who scored 79 points in three games, was named to the all-tournament team.

Desert 69, Paraclete 57--Tournament most valuable player Terry Peaks scored 27 points as Desert (4-1) won the Boron tournament title. Ruffin Crozat scored 13 points and Sean O’Gara added 12 for Paraclete (3-4).

Ventura 72, Santa Barbara 41--Calvin Curry scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates in the championship game of the Santa Barbara tournament.

Mike King and Stephane Brown each added 10 points for Ventura, which improved to 13-0.

WOMEN

Valley 76, Sacramento City 71--Sophomore guard Rosa Mendez, a former City Section 3-A Division player of the year from Roosevelt High, scored 20 points on 10-of-17 shooting and added 12 assists to lead the Monarchs (8-1) in a nonconference game at home.

Canyons 105, Victor Valley 70--All-tournament forward Kate Stoll had 35 points and 19 rebounds, and guard Terra Bruessel contributed a school-record 17 assists as the Cougars won the consolation title of the Hancock tournament.

Lisa Hilton added 24 points and Jana Kovar 18 for Canyons (5-5).

Pierce 64, Mt. San Jacinto 57--Yolanda Davidian had 25 points and 13 rebounds for Pierce (3-6) in a consolation game of the Southwestern tournament. Shani Samuels added 17 points.
