Glendale-area soccer fans will have to wait until the end of the season to find out which school has the best girls’ team.

La Canada and Crescenta Valley played to a 2-2 tie last week.

Last season, La Canada, under Coach Dayl Zimmerman, twice defeated Crescenta Valley, which is coached by brothers Judd and Matt Bogust.

In the tie, Dana Pollack and Carlene Pengra scored goals for La Canada. Lynette Micheli and Michelle Cena scored goals for Crescenta Valley.

La Canada is 5-1-2 and Crescenta Valley is 4-2-3.

The St. Francis boys’ soccer team demonstrated its strength with a 2-1 victory over La Canada.

St. Francis overcame a 1-0 deficit with second-half goals by Dan Brubaker and Erik Hewko to hand La Canada its first defeat.

St. Francis improved to 2-1-1. Nick Andrus scored for La Canada, which entered the week 5-1.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College football team, which finished 8-3, put nine players on the Western State Conference all-conference team.

Quarterback Eric Kiesau, running back Pathon Rucker, wide receiver Angel Martinez, tight end Troy Aldrich, lineman Brian Feola and kicker Brad Faunce were named to the first-team offense.

Lineman Albert Kawaoka, linebacker Scott Blade and defensive back Vance Mitchell were named to the first-team defense.

Feola was also selected first-team All-American by the Community College Coaches’ Assn.

The Glendale College men’s basketball team is playing host to the Vaquero Classic tournament this week.

The tournament, which began Wednesday night, features Glendale, Los Angeles Southwest, El Camino, San Diego City College, Harbor, Los Angeles City College, Ventura and Compton.

The Glendale College women’s basketball team entered the week with a 6-5 record after defeating San Bernardino and Rancho Santiago.

Denise Dal Ponte scored 19 points in the Vaqueros’ 65-42 victory over San Bernardino. Stephanie Ball led Glendale with 23 points in a 64-49 victory over Rancho Santiago.

Glendale is idle until Jan. 2 when the Vaqueros play host to Oxnard in the first game of their Western State Conference schedule.

Jacques Salsberg and America Rivas of Glendale were named cross-country athletes of the year in the Western State Conference.

Luis Jacobo and Sergio Becerril were first-team all-conference selections.

Efrain Montes of the Glendale men’s soccer team was named player of the year in the Western State Conference.

Sal Rizzo, Simon Castro and David Montes were named first-team all-conference.

COLLEGES

The University of Washington will use Occidental College’s practice fields, weight room and locker room in preparation for its Rose Bowl matchup against Michigan on New Year’s Day.

The Huskies, who are seeking their third consecutive Rose Bowl victory, will be at Occidental Sunday through Dec. 31.

It’s the first time since 1962 that Occidental has served as host to a Rose Bowl participant. Minnesota stayed at Occidental and defeated UCLA that year.

The Occidental College men’s basketball team improved to 3-2 with a split in the first two games of a three-game road trip in Oregon.

Occidental defeated Multnomah Bible College, 102-85, Saturday as Hung Duong and Sandy Brown each scored 18 points. The Tigers lost to George Fox, 90-64, despite 16 points by Brown. Occidental concluded its swing through the Pacific Northwest Tuesday night against Concordia College.

Occidental will participate in the in the Pt. Loma tournament in San Diego Dec. 28-29. Occidental opens the tournament against Wisconsin- Platteville, which was ranked No. 1 in Division III by Sports Illustrated before the season.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Adam Jacobsen, Crescenta Valley--Jacobsen, a senior guard, scored 23 points to lead the Falcons to a 56-46 victory over La Canada.

Jacobsen, an All-Southern Section player who transferred from Glendora High, is averaging 27 points a game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Sandy Brown, Occidental--Brown, a senior forward, has come back strong after missing almost all of last season because of injuries.

Brown, who played at Manual Arts High, scored 18 points during a 102-85 victory over Multnomah Bible College. He had 16 points during the Tigers’ 90-64 loss to George Fox.

MISCELLANY

Jonie-Marie McGavock of Glendale won the uneven bars event at the United States Gymnastics Federation championships last weekend in Santa Barbara. McGavock, 11, won her event in Level 7. The USGF sponsors competitions for levels 5-10.

McGavock competes for the Crescenta Valley Gymnastics Club, which is moving its base from La Crescenta to San Dimas this month. More than 30 teams from across the state will compete in the USGF team championships Sunday at the Charter Oak Gymnastics Club in Covina.

The city of Glendale has begun sign-ups for tennis lessons that will begin Jan. 4. Adult and youth classes are available. Instruction will include eight, 50-minute sessions. Information: (818) 548-3796.
