Shanahan enters his second season with the Lobos expecting good things from his team. “The returning players from last year’s varsity have improved greatly,” Shanahan said. “That, coupled with some formidable help from the junior varsity, should put us into contention this season. . . . We look to place second or third in league.” No matter what talented new players Los Amigos has on its roster, the Lobos still have to deal with league powers Rancho Alamitos and Kennedy, so making a run at the title might be asking a bit much. But the Lobos definitely could win a few league games after finishing in the cellar without a victory last season. Two returning starters, Garcia and Tran, anchor the team. Garcia averaged 4.5 points in 1991-92, and Tran averaged 5.2. But three players--Zavala, Gonzalez and Mora--being promoted from the junior varsity are the ones who Shanahan is banking on to help the Lobos considerably. Zavala averaged 15 points last season, Gonzalez eight points and Mora six points. Shanahan tabs Zavala as a potential all-county player, if not this season, then certainly next season. Though the Lobos are deep in quick guards, they are in dire need of height. Only two of their key players are taller than 5 feet 7.
