First-year coach Flanegin tries his hand at basketball after leading the Mustangs to several successful seasons on the softball field. “We want to have a winning season and compete for the league championship,” Flanegin said. But Trabuco Hills, like everyone else, should challenge for second place behind Costa Mesa. Kargel is the team’s top player. She is versatile and earned second-team all-league honors last season after averaging seven points. Kargel’s outside shooting should complement the inside play of Leckey and Ross, who will have to step up after combining to average nine points last season. Montanez, a transfer from Ohio, has made an immediate impact, leading the team in scoring after nine games. Hatch, a sophomore playing her first year of basketball, also has shown potential to help with the outside shooting. “We need to beat some teams that have winning programs,” Flanegin said. “We’re trying to build a successful program, one that’s been down, and now we’re trying to climb that mountain.” In last week’s Estancia tournament, the Mustangs beat Saddleback, 45-34, for third place.
