Alexander, who started at point guard as a freshman last season, will move to center this season. This typifies Century’s shortcomings, which includes a lack of height and experience. “We start three sophomores, but we play pretty hard,” Watts said. Alexander, a 4.0 student who averaged 6.6 points and earned honorable mention all-league honors last season, is Century’s most versatile player. Also returning is second-team all-leaguer Zepeda, who averaged eight points, and Vallejo, who averaged 8.2 points. Although the Centurions lost last season’s leading scorer, Lucy Guerrero, and Gabby Mendoza, who plays at Rancho Santiago, they hope to contend for second or third in league. “We’re potentially a better basketball team than last year,” Watts said. “I think the league’s tougher this year, so I don’t know if we can win more.” Watts has a record of turning programs around, however. After the Centurions finished 0-10 in league two seasons ago under Watts, they finished 4-6 last season. In ‘85, Watts led a Santa Ana girls’ team to 13 victories after winning only four in the previous four years.
