The St. Francis soccer team continued its impressive play last week by winning the La Canada tournament.

St. Francis (6-1-1) overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Hoover, 4-1, for the championship.

Ben Miller, Dan Brubaker, Nick Riddall and Chris McCoy scored goals for St. Francis, which also defeated Maranatha and Hart en route to the title.

The La Canada girls’ basketball team finished second in a tournament sponsored by Burroughs and Bellarmine-Jefferson highs, losing to Bell-Jeff, 55-47, in the championship game.

Melissa Lord scored 18 points and Beth Stanton had 11 for the Spartans, who entered the week with a 6-4 record. Lord and Stanton were selected to the all-tournament team.

The La Canada girls’ soccer team lost to Louisville, 2-1, in the consolation championship of the Simi Valley tournament.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team finished third in its own tournament last weekend, defeating Los Angeles Harbor College, 84-76.

Freshman Mike Macchia scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds for Glendale (6-7).

Glendale had lost to El Camino, 90-81, in the semifinals. Kenny Collins scored 29 points for the Vaqueros, who led, 45-42, at halftime, but were outscored, 44-21, during the first 16 minutes of the second half. Glendale defeated Los Angeles Southwest, 75-71, in overtime in a first-round game.

Ventura defeated El Camino, 99-77, for the tournament championship.

Glendale played Oxnard Wednesday night and will participate in the Palomar tournament next week.

The Glendale College women’s basketball team entered the week with a 6-6 record after losing to Cypress College, 60-53, on Friday.

Kara Fitzgerald scored 14 points for Glendale, which is idle until Jan. 2, when the Vaqueros open their Western State Conference schedule against Oxnard.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s basketball team dropped to 3-3 by going 1-2 on a three-game trip to Oregon.

The Tigers defeated Multnomah Bible College and lost to George Fox and Concordia.

Occidental has been without junior center Blair Slattery because of a wrist injury, but Tiger Coach Brian Newhall is encouraged by his team’s play.

“When we get everybody healthy, we should be OK,” Newhall said. “The injuries we’ve had are turning out to be a positive thing because we’re getting a chance to give other players more minutes as we get ready for the conference.”

Occidental will participate in the Pt. Loma tournament in San Diego on Monday and Tuesday. Occidental opens the tournament against Wisconsin-Platteville, which was ranked No. 1 in Division III by Sports Illustrated before the season.

Occidental opens play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Jan. 13 against Claremont.

The Washington football team continued to practice at Occidental College this week in preparation for its Rose Bowl matchup against Michigan on New Year’s Day.

The Huskies, who are seeking their third consecutive Rose Bowl victory, will be at Occidental through Dec. 31.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Melissa Lord, La Canada--Lord, The Times’ Glendale player of the year last season, led La Canada to a second-place finish in the Burroughs-Bellarmine-Jefferson tournament.

Lord, a senior, scored 18 points for the Spartans during a 55-47 loss in the championship game against Bell-Jeff.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Mike Macchia, Glendale--Macchia, a freshman from San Gabriel High, scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds during the Vaqueros’ 84-76 victory over Harbor in the third-place game of the Glendale tournament.

Macchia scored 12 points during the Vaqueros’ first-round victory over Southwest.
