OUTLOOK

Fountain Valley should be able to compete with anyone inside, but it’s the outside game that will be the Barons’ key. The Barons will need some consistent perimeter shooting to open things up for Murdent, who averaged 14 points in league last year. “Julie’s the person who led us and will probably lead us again, but our opponents know that,” Strausburg said. “We’re working on becoming more consistent outside.” Nuruki and Avila are the team’s likely three-point threats, while Traw, Mugavero and Ybarra provide the inside support. “We’re not rebounding as well as I’d like us to yet, but we’re still out-rebounding nearly all of our opponents,” Strausburg said. “If we can get to that next level on the boards, it’ll help our perimeter game.” Kuhlmann provides a good mid-range touch and ball-handling at forward, while Strange has impressed Strausburg with her aggressiveness. Another concern for the Barons is a lack of experience and depth at the guard positions. Strausburg expects the team’s good chemistry to help compensate for the lack of experience.
