SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The 1992 high school football season proved to be extremely successful for area schools.

Bishop Amat won the Southern Section Division I championship, Duarte and San Marino advanced to division championship games, Muir made it to the semifinals and 26 teams participated in the playoffs.

The year was also marked by outstanding individual achievement, which The Times honors today with the announcement of the 1992 All-San Gabriel Valley football team.

The 23 players named to the team were selected by Times sportswriters based upon nominations from area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate.

Players named to the first team will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast Jan. 17 at the Pasadena Hilton. Winners of the San Gabriel Valley back, lineman and coach-of-the-year awards will be announced at the breakfast.

Here is a position-by-position look at The Times’ 1992 All-San Gabriel Valley team:

RUNNING BACKS

Saladin McCullough of Muir was, perhaps, the most explosive runner in the Southern Section.

McCullough, who was named to The 1991 Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley team as a junior, gained 2,142 yards and scored 36 touchdowns in 1992. He averaged 9.18 yards a carry.

Bishop Amat’s unbeaten season was due, in part, to the outstanding play of junior running back Rodney Sermons, who gained more than 1,400 yards and scored 24 touchdowns. Sermons, the offensive player of the year in the Del Rey League, gained 96 yards in the Division I championship game against Loyola.

QUARTERBACK

Greg Ainsworth of Duarte was the player who made Duarte’s offense go, carrying the Dons to the Division VI championship game against Valencia.

Ainsworth rushed for 1,500 yards and passed for 660 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also made 70 tackles as a safety and intercepted two passes.

RECEIVERS

Steve Park of San Marino helped the Titans’ in their drive to the Division VIII championship game against La Mirada.

Park, a senior, caught 56 passes for 1,054 yards and seven touchdowns. He was also named defensive back of the year in the Rio Hondo League.

Yo Yamamoto of Workman is a repeat selection to the All-San Gabriel Valley team. Yamamoto, a senior, caught 49 passes for 902 yards. He also scored 15 touchdowns and was an all-league selection as a defensive back.

Tom Rosser, a junior tight end from Los Altos, caught 22 passes for 316 yards and six touchdowns. He also played linebacker, a position from which he was in on 100 tackles, including nine sacks.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Muir’s high-powered running game sprang from the blocking of James Webster, a senior who provided many of the holes for McCullough and quarterback Andy Colbert. Webster was selected first-team All-Pacific League.

Jon Himebauch of Damien was one of the area’s most proficient linemen. Himebauch also played linebacker and made 63 unassisted tackles.

Eric Michel, a senior from Arcadia, was a dominant force as a two-way starter.

Armando Contreras of Nogales is a two-time all-league player for the Nobles. Contreras, a senior, was responsible for springing Lamonte Adams and Kevin Devine on several long touchdown runs.

Enrique Ybanez of Bishop Amat, a senior, showed outstanding consistency for a team that seemed to get better every week. Ybanez was equally adept as a run and pass blocker.

KICKER

Brian Gleason of Los Altos made nine of 14 field-goal attempts, including two from 42 yards and one from 40. Gleason, a junior, made all 19 of his conversion attempts.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Wilhans Ili of Bishop Amat was a three-year starter for the Lancers and one of the key players for a defensive unit that carried the team to a Southern Section championship and victory over Sylmar in the CIF/Reebok Bowl. Ili, a senior, was in on 125 tackles, including 11 1/2 sacks. He was the co-most valuable player of the Del Rey League.

Damien senior Casey Dailey was named the Baseline League defensive player of the year after making a school-record 14 sacks. Dailey also averaged 41.3 yards for 38 punts.

Jonathan Mosley of Muir, an All-Southern Section nose guard as a junior in 1991, led the Mustangs in tackles and was named as the Pacific League’s co-MVP on defense this season.

LINEBACKERS

Joe Barnes was the key player for a Duarte defensive unit that helped carry the Falcons to the Division VI title game. Barnes, a senior, lined up at several positions and made big plays with regularity.

Treyvone Towns of Pasadena is one of the San Gabriel Valley’s finest athletes. Towns, a senior, had more than 100 tackles for the Bulldogs and rushed for more than 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns.

Bishop Amat senior George Guzman was named most valuable defensive player in the Del Rey League for his physical play and leadership. Guzman, a senior, was in on 111 tackles for the undefeated Lancers.

Muir senior Derek Norman was the Mustangs’ most versatile player. He intercepted six passes, returning three of them for touchdowns. Norman also played tight end and handled kicking duties.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Mike Harris of Charter Oak led the Chargers to an unbeaten regular season with outstanding play on defense and offense. Harris, a senior, intercepted three passes and also had 2,186 all-purpose yards and 25 touchdowns.

Baldwin Park senior Lawrence Phillips was also a two-way threat. Phillips was one of the Braves’ leading tacklers in addition to gaining 1,400 yards and scoring 22 touchdowns during the regular season.

Z Hodges of Blair, a second-team selection last year, had an outstanding season as a two-way starter. Hodges was an excellent cover man on defense and returned an interception for a touchdown. He also rushed for 1,332 yards and scored 17 touchdowns as a running back, wide receiver and kick returner.

Nogales senior Kevin Devine completed his third season as a starter for the Nobles with the kind of play that made him the Sierra League’s athlete of the year in 1991-92. This season, Devine started at defensive back and running back.
