BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Opens SCIAC Play With Win

Cal Lutheran mounted a second-half rally to knock off La Verne, 78-74, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball opener at La Verne on Wednesday night.

Cal Lutheran (9-3, 1-0 in SCIAC play) trailed, 43-33, at halftime. The Kingsmen pulled even with 2 minutes 29 seconds remaining on a three-point basket by Paul Tapp, who scored 15 points.

Damon Ridley scored a game-high 26 points for Cal Lutheran on eight-of-11 shooting and added seven steals. Rupert Sapwell added 16 points and Derrick Clark had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Kingsmen.

In other men’s games:

Antelope Valley 91, Citrus 78--John Puckett scored 26 points and Danny Prince sank six of eight three-point shots and added 20 points for visiting Antelope Valley (13-6, 2-2) in a Foothill Conference game.

Valley 86, Cuesta 82 (OT)--Brian Jackson scored 22 points and had 21 rebounds, and Joe Mauldin added 21 points for Valley in a WSC inter-division game.

Glendale 73, Santa Barbara 59--Kenny Collins sank four of six three-point shots and scored 20 points for host Glendale in a WSC inter-division game. Nick Athanassakis had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Glendale (10-9, 3-1).

WOMEN

Pierce 69, Oxnard 65--Yolanda Davidian had 30 points and 22 rebounds for Pierce (6-11, 2-3) in a Western State Conference inter-division game. Teammate Shani Samuels had 26 points and 10 rebounds. Edith Bradley came off the bench to score 20 for Oxnard.

Ventura 80, Bakersfield 56--Nicole Ellis had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Cori Herman added 20 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for Ventura (13-5, 5-0) in a WSC inter-division game.

Canyons 92, Moorpark 79--Six players scored in double figures for Canyons (8-12, 2-3) to offset a 33-point performance by Moorpark’s Tamara Pacheco in a WSC inter-division game at Canyons. Pacheco made 19 of 21 free throws, including 15 of 15 in the second half.

Valley 70, Cuesta 52--Rosa Mendez had 20 points and Nicole Baynes added 15 points and nine rebounds as Valley handed Cuesta (14-5, 4-1) a loss in a WSC inter-division game. Amy Horst had 11 rebounds for Valley (18-4, 4-1).

BOYS

Thousand Oaks 75, Agoura 49--The Lancers (14-1, 5-0) won the Marmonte League game behind Paul Foster (22 points) and Jason Hartman (16). Denny LeVine added 10 points. Nick Foster, Paul’s twin, scored 11 points.

Channel Islands 58, Newbury Park 56 (OT)--Channel Islands’ Joe Valenzuela sank a three-point shot with nine seconds left in regulation to send the Marmonte League game into overtime, and Dewaun Nunnery’s three-point basket won it in the extra period.

Simi Valley 75, Westlake 54--Nathan Simmons had 25 points, six rebounds and five steals, and Craig Griffin added 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals for host Simi Valley (13-4, 4-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Camarillo 57, Royal 56--Jimmy Harbour scored 19 points for Camarillo in a Marmonte League game. Khamisi Thurman had 20 points and 11 rebounds for host Royal.

Ventura 68, Buena 60--Senior forward Adam Fairbanks scored a career-high 27 points and had seven rebounds for Buena, but the Bulldogs (2-11, 1-3) couldn’t pull off an upset against Channel League rival Ventura (11-2, 4-0).

Hueneme 74, Rio Mesa 60--The Vikings (9-4, 4-0) got the best of what proved to be a family feud in the Channel League. Wendell Nunnery scored 35 points, including 11-for-11 from the free-throw line, to outshine his cousin, Tim Nunnery, of Rio Mesa (6-9, 0-4), who scored 31 points and made 10 of 10 free throws.

Crespi 60, Chaminade 45--After starting 0-3 in the Mission League, the Celts (6-9, 2-3) have battled back. Jeff Luderer had 19 points.

Harvard-Westlake 82, Alemany 80--Scott Garson led Harvard-Westlake (5-11, 1-4) with 24 points in the Mission League game. David Winner had 29 points for Alemany (4-10, 1-4).
