Weekend of Events to Benefit San Pedro Baseball Program

San Pedro High will sponsor a series of events on Jan. 22-24 to benefit the school’s baseball program.

A golf tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Jan. 22 at the Meadowlark Golf Course in Lakewood. The cost is $95 including green fees and dinner. The deadline for entries is Wednesday. Information: Jerry Rodin at (310) 547-4993.

Several events are scheduled for Jan. 23. A baseball card show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the San Pedro High boys’ gym. There will be free baseball clinics from 10 a.m. to noon at the school’s baseball field. Among the scheduled instructors is third baseman Chris Donnels of the Houston Astros and second baseman Brett Boone of the Seattle Mariners.

The San Pedro girls’ softball team, which won the City Section 4-A Division title last season, will play an alumni squad at noon.

On Jan. 24, there will be a home run hitting contest from 11 a.m. to noon and two alumni baseball games from noon to 3 p.m.

Alumni scheduled to participate include catcher Brian Harper of the Minnesota Twins and former major leaguers Alan Ashby and Garry Maddox. The deadline for alumni players is Wednesday.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will open its West Coast Conference season with games against Portland today and Gonzaga on Saturday at Gersten Pavilion.

Both games begin at 5:15 p.m. Portland is 6-8 and Gonzaga 5-6.

Loyola (9-3) is off to its best start since the 1987-88 season.

The Lions will be trying for their first conference victory since February, 1991, when they defeated the University of San Diego, 95-93, in overtime.

Loyola has won seven of eight games. The Lions beat Southern Utah, 68-60 in overtime, and New Mexico, 60-53, last week.

The Lions have been led by junior forward Sheri Brown, who is averaging 17 points and 10.4 rebounds. Brown scored 45 points and grabbed 28 rebounds in the victories over Southern Utah and New Mexico and was named conference player of the week.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will play tonight at Cal State Bakersfield and Saturday at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Bakersfield (14-0, 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play) is the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II. San Luis Obispo is 5-8 and 0-2.

Dominguez Hills (9-3, 1-1) beat Cal Poly Pomona, 74-56, and lost to Cal State Los Angeles, 65-62, last week in conference games.

Bakersfield is led by center Roheen Oates, who averages 17.9 points.

San Luis Obispo has been led by guards Jeff Oliver and Matt Clawson. The Mustangs expect all-conference center Shawn Kirkeby, who has been suffering from a knee injury, to play against Dominguez Hills.

Dominguez Hills is led by guard Raymond Bennett, who averages 16.2 points.

The Toros have given up an average of 62.8 points and are ranked fifth in Division II in scoring defense.
