Jon Berg of Crescenta Valley was named lineman of the year, Aman Abye of Marshall was named back of the year and Jim Beckenhauer of Crescenta Valley was named coach of the year at The Times’ annual Glendale-area football awards breakfast Sunday at the Pasadena Hilton.

Twenty three players from Glendale-area schools were honored at the event. Former USC defensive back Stephon Pace was the speaker.

Berg, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior, was characterized by Beckenhauer as the heart and soul of a Crescenta Valley defense that limited opponents to 192 yards a game and helped the Falcons advance to the Southern Section Division II semifinals.

Abye, a 5-9, 174-pound senior, played offense and defense for Marshall and was an All-City Section selection after he helped lead the Barristers to the 4-A quarterfinals. On offense, Abye rushed for almost 700 yards, caught 18 passes for 360 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He also intercepted four passes as a defensive back.

Beckenhauer, in his eighth season as varsity coach at Crescenta Valley, guided his team to the Southern Section Division II semifinals, where the Falcons lost to eventual co-champion Los Alamitos. Crescenta Valley’s only other defeat was against Muir, another Division II semifinalist.

Jaiya Figueras, an All-Southern Section defensive player from Glendale High, has given an unwritten commitment to Oregon.

The 6-2, 205-pound Figueras was in on more than 100 tackles and also intercepted five passes as a linebacker and defensive back last season. He caught 27 passes for 331 yards as a tailback and wide receiver.

Four former athletes from La Canada will be inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame Friday night.

Alex Case (baseball, 1984), Jon Ventress (track, 1982), Pam Dickie Hermann (gymnastics, 1980) and Donna Corcoran (basketball, 1980) will be honored during halftime of the boys’ basketball game between La Canada and Temple City.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team entered Wednesday night’s Western State Conference Southern Division opener against College of the Canyons with a two-game winning streak.

The Vaqueros, under Coach Brian Beauchemin, improved to 11-9 with WSC victories over Santa Barbara and Cuesta.

Glendale defeated Santa Barbara, 73-59, behind 20 points by Kenny Collins, who made four of the Vaqueros’ nine three-point baskets.

Glendale beat Cuesta, 77-54, as Will Burr scored 20 points for the Vaqueros, who play host to West Los Angeles College on Saturday night.

The Glendale women’s team had a two-game losing streak entering its WSC Southern Division opener against Canyons on Wednesday.

The Vaqueros (8-10) lost, 63-60, to Cuesta on Saturday. Stephanie Ball scored 13 points for Glendale in the defeat.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s basketball team is off to an excellent start in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn.

The Tigers (9-4) defeated Claremont and Whittier in their conference openers.

Junior center Blair Slattery scored 17 points and had nine rebounds in the Tigers’ 75-69 victory over Claremont. Slattery had 23 points and nine rebounds during Occidental’s 82-78 victory over Whittier.

Occidental played host to Pomona-Pitzer Wednesday night, and will continue its SCIAC schedule Saturday at La Verne.

The Occidental women’s team entered the week hoping to end a streak during which the Tigers have lost four games in a row and five of their past six.

Occidental opened SCIAC play with a 55-48 loss to Redlands and a 72-67 overtime defeat by Pomona-Pitzer.

Occidental’s Stephanie Francis scored 11 points against Redlands and 17 points against Pomona-Pitzer.

The Tigers play a SCIAC game against Whittier on Friday and a nonconference game against Southern California College Tuesday.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Roshanda Ervin, Glendale--Ervin scored 21 points for the Dynamiters during a 52-51 victory over rival Hoover, which helped Glendale improve its record to 4-9 and 2-1 in the Pacific League.

Ervin made 10 of 16 free throws to help Glendale secure the victory.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

David Pike, Occidental--Pike, a 6-5 freshman forward, scored 12 points and had eight rebounds during Occidental’s 75-69 SCIAC-opening victory over Claremont. Pike made two three-point baskets in the final four minutes to secure the victory.

Pike, who graduated from Patrick Henry High in San Diego, also scored 15 points and had eight rebounds in the Tigers’ 82-78 victory over Whittier.

MISCELLANY

The city of Pasadena is sponsoring a golf tournament Feb. 12 at Brookside Golf Course. The tournament, open to the public, will feature a scramble format. Awards and lunch will follow the tournament. Proceeds from the event will benefit Pasadena’s United Way/Brotherhood Crusade campaign. Information: (818) 405-4660.
