It’s hard to overstate Floyd’s importance to the Western basketball team. For instance, he scored 24 points in Western’s 39-37 victory over Magnolia Friday, helping the Pioneers (13-5, 3-1 in the Orange League) move into a first-place tie with Valencia and Magnolia. Floyd scored all six of Western’s points in the fourth quarter and the only points in overtime--a 16-foot jumper with three seconds left in the second overtime. Western Coach Matt Cavanaugh said Floyd was also valuable on defense, holding Magnolia’s leading scorer, Aaron Williams, to 10 points, about seven below his average. Floyd also scored 21 points in a 53-49 loss to Valencia Wednesday.

Other top performers:

Jeff Carr, who had 29 points, 15 rebounds, eight steals and seven assists as Mission Viejo defeated El Toro, 59-38. He added 28 points in a 61-47 victory over Dana Hills. Carr made 19 of 23 free throws and 19 of 33 field goals in the two games.

Jim Harris, who averaged 24 points in Ocean View’s Sunset League victories. He scored 25 as the Seahawks beat Edison, 64-47, and 23 as they beat Marina, 60-55.

Filberto Maldonado and Alex Mandel, who helped El Modena’s soccer team to Century League victories over Orange and Foothill, then tied for seventh in the county poll. Mandel assisted on Maldonado’s winning goal with 10 minutes left in a 2-1 victory over Orange. Maldonado had two goals and Mandel had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over Foothill.

Roger Santiago, who was named the top wrestler in the San Clemente tournament after pinning three of his four opponents to win the 103-pound division. Santiago helped Santa Ana win the team title.
