HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ventura Remains Undefeated in Channel League

Darien Roberts scored 21 points, and Anthony McCurtis added 18 to help Ventura defeat Rio Mesa, 83-78, Wednesday night to remain undefeated in Channel League play.

Ventura (16-2, 8-0 in league play) led by two points after three quarters but then pulled away. Rio Mesa (8-10, 3-5) was led by Tim Nunnery (28 points) and Jade Peterson (26).

In other boys’ games:

Hueneme 59, Oxnard 47--Hueneme improved to 6-2 in the Channel League; Oxnard fell to 1-7. One key factor was free-throw shooting. Hueneme hit 14 of 17 from the line; Oxnard was five for 13. Wendell Nunnery (24 points, 11 rebounds) and Tremaine Jones (14 points) led the winners. Felipe Angeles and Larry Bumpus each had 16 for Oxnard.

Camarillo 64, Newbury Park 55--Scorpion Jim Harbour scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a Marmonte League victory over visiting Newbury Park.

Camarillo (10-9, 7-3) led, 18-10, after the first quarter and did not relinquish the lead. Newbury Park’s Keith Smith scored 22 points.

Chatsworth 72, Granada Hills 64--Brady Mertes scored 25 points, and Trenell Floyd added 16 to lead the Chancellors (9-8, 3-0) past Granada Hills (2-12, 0-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Tyrone Jackman scored 23 for Granada Hills and Steve Fisher added 16.

San Fernando 60, Taft 50--Jerome Elliott scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Tigers (8-6, 2-1) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Johnny Williams scored 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for Taft (6-7, 1-2), which played without second-leading rebounder Ricky Steele, out with flu.

Both teams struggled at the free-throw line.

Taft made 10 of 27, San Fernando eight of 22.

Birmingham 59, Sylmar 47--Greg Whiteside scored a game-high 22 points to help the Braves (11-5, 4-1) beat Sylmar (3-9, 1-5) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Grant 73, Van Nuys 56--A 19-10 third quarter clinched the Valley Pac-8 game for the Lancers (7-8, 3-2), who got 19 points from Rick Forscutt and 15 from Thi Chen. Tasheri Walker, Cesar Felici and Pete Bobadilla each had 14 for the Wolves (4-11, 2-3).

Monroe 83, Sherman Oaks CES 59--The Vikings turned this Valley Pac-8 game into a laugher, leading by 15 points after the first quarter and never looking back. Tweedy Stiner finished with 24 points to lead Monroe (14-3, 5-1), which made nine three-point shots. Sherman Oaks fell to 1-10, 0-4 despite John Cannon’s 28 points and 18 rebounds.

North Hollywood 77, Locke 69--The Huskies (18-1) put an exclamation point on their fifth consecutive victory by coming from behind and outscoring host Locke, 24-15, in the fourth quarter of a nonleague game. Damon Ollie had 19 points and 17 rebounds. Fantasia Johnson added 22 points and Arthur Lee 21 for North Hollywood.

Marshall 86, Verdugo Hills 66--Eddie Powell scored 26 points and had 19 rebounds and Bryan de los Reyes had 24 for the Dons (3-10, 3-4).

Loyola 78, Alemany 66--Four players scored in double figures for the Indians (6-13, 2-7) but it didn’t keep first-place Loyola (16-3, 8-1) from winning the Mission League game.

David Winner led Alemany with 18 points, followed by Chris Walker with 17.

Fillmore 64, Calabasas 61--Scott Decuir scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Flashes (13-4) past Calabasas (3-14) in a nonleague game.

GIRLS

Cleveland 47, El Camino Real 46--April Fleming stole a pass and passed to Olivia Laguna, who hit the winning layup with about 20 seconds to play in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Monroe 46, Canoga Park 34--Senior point guard Deanna Nakamura narrowly missed a triple-double as the Vikings (5-2, 4-2) won a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Nakamura had 12 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds.

Granada Hills 48, Chatsworth 41--Georgia Roy scored 12 points for Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Kennedy 75, San Fernando 20--Shaneya Harris scored 26 points, had 10 steals and grabbed nine rebounds as Kennedy (9-5, 3-0) rolled to an easy Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Van Nuys 45, Grant 37--Gohar Tumanian scored eight of her nine points in the fourth quarter, helping the Wolves overcome a six-point deficit and remain undefeated in the Valley Pac-8 Conference.

North Hollywood 71, Roosevelt 50--Darvena Merritt scored a game-high 20 points to lead host North Hollywood (11-5).
