COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Uses Five-Run Inning to Upset Pima

Richard Ernst had two hits and five runs batted in, including a three-run home run to highlight a five-run sixth inning, to lead Orange Coast to a 9-7 victory over Pima, Ariz., in the Southwestern baseball tournament Saturday in Chula Vista.

Orange Coast will play San Bernardino in the losers’ bracket final today with the winner advancing to play Rancho Santiago for the championship. Pima (3-3) entered the tournament ranked second in the nation by the National Junior College Baseball poll.

Randy Karliner struck out three over 2 1/3 innings to earn the save for OCC (3-3).

In another Southwestern tournament game:

Rancho Santiago 3, San Bernardino 2 (10)--Derek Brown hit a single to center to score Tony Truel from third for the winning run in the top of the 10th for Rancho Santiago (6-0). Ryan Filbeck pitched a three-hitter, with eight strikeouts and one walk, facing five batters above the minimum. San Bernardino is 5-2-1.

In the American River baseball tournament:

Saddleback 15, Contra Costa 0 (time limit)--Cade Gaspar pitched six innings, giving up three hits while striking out eight for Saddleback (5-1). Gaspar also had two hits and three RBIs. Contra Costa is 2-3.

In the Cypress-Kiwanis baseball tournament:

Cypress 5, Moorpark 3--Gary Manley had two hits and an RBI to lead Cypress (6-1) in a semifinal victory. Cypress’ Eric Stevens stole home in the third inning.

Golden West 9, Long Beach City 8 (12)--First baseman Jake Smith drove in the winning run for Golden West (3-3) on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 12th. Jim Slagle had four hits and three RBIs for Golden West. The Rustlers finished third in the tournament after Moorpark eliminated them with an 8-5 victory.

In the Gilroy Galvin softball tournament:

Saddleback 3, Santa Rosa 0--Laura Kesterson pitched a no-hitter for Saddleback (5-0) in a first-round game. Kesterson pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over Hartnell earlier Saturday.

In the the Long Beach tournament:

Fullerton 5, Taft 2--Pitcher Angie Guerrero, who went two for two with an RBI, earned the victory for Fullerton (3-0), which advanced to the championship game.
