It was just a matter of time before one of those long-range cannon shots would find the net.

Ten minutes into the second half, Jenny Clabaugh scored from 40 yards on a direct kick to give host El Toro a 1-0 victory over Ocean View Monday in the first round of the Division I girls’ soccer playoffs.

Second-seeded El Toro (18-2-3), the Division 4-A champion in 1990 and ’91 and runner-up in 1992, will travel to meet unseeded South Torrance Thursday in the quarterfinals.

“I didn’t think it was going to go in,” Clabaugh said of her shot. “I just tried to nail it.”

“It was the first time we ran it right all year long,” Coach Kerry Krause said of the trick play in which three El Toro players consecutively screened Clabaugh’s kick. “. . . and she jammed it.”

Amanda Stack, Paige Viloria and goalkeeper Traci Jensen, who recorded five saves, anchored El Toro’s defense, which was its key to victory.

“We were more aggressive,” Krause said. “We won it in the air, and we were the first to the ball on the ground.”

Offensively, forward Denise Kenyon had three close shots on goal for the Chargers, one of which came with 25 seconds remaining in the first half.

Kenyon headed the ball off a Julie Bargiel cross and proceeded to challenge Lynn Brown, Ocean View’s goalkeeper. The ball appeared to cross the goal line, but the referee ruled Brown had control and discounted the goal.

Ocean View came close to a goal only once with 13:30 left in the first half, when forward Kimberly Engesser centered a direct kick from the left side. El Toro midfielder Sherri Kaminski headed the ball to clear it from the El Toro box.

Lynn Brown had eight saves for Ocean View, which finished 19-6-3.
