It’s no secret how Kennedy High swingman Joe Wyatt averaged 30.6 points for a team that finished 7-17. Wyatt took advantage of freebies. He made 175 of 202 free throws (86.6%).

Kennedy failed to qualify for the Southern Section playoffs, but Wyatt went out in style. He scored 39 points against Taft on Friday in the Golden Cougars’ finale. He scored 22 or more points in every game. . . .

Basketball: Wyatt ended the season as the Northwest Valley Conference scoring champion, averaging 29.3 points in 10 games. Senior swingman Shawn Bankhead of Cleveland was second with an average of 25.6. The pair shared the North Valley League’s most valuable player award last season as juniors. Point guard Trenton Cross of Reseda and center Johnny Williams of Taft, both juniors, tied for third with a 19.1 average. . . .

Demond Callahan of Canoga Park scored 46 points and grabbed 24 rebounds in two games last week. Callahan hit seven of 10 three-point baskets, raising his average to a team-high 45% (18 of 40). But, the team average (41.8%) isn’t far behind. . . . Adam Jacobsen, the Southern Section’s all-time leading three-point shooter, hit only two of 11 shots from beyond the arc on Friday in Crescenta Valley’s 57-43 victory against Arlington. . . .

Only three of the Valley Pac-8’s nine teams finished the regular season with a winning record. . . . Hart was the lone Foothill League team to complete the regular season with a winning record (17-7). . . .

Oak Park’s 56-37 victory over Kern Valley in the opening round of the playoffs was the Eagles’ second playoff win in school history. Oak Park, which opened in 1980, earned its first playoff victory last season, also against Kern Valley. . . .

L.A. Baptist’s Matt Kilanowski grabbed 20 rebounds, tying a school record, on Friday in the Knights’ 78-74 double-overtime victory against Cantwell Sacred Heart in the playoffs.

Girls’ Basketball: Rachel McSorley set a Nordhoff single-game scoring record with 36 points in the Rangers’ 64-47 victory Saturday over Notre Dame Academy in the first round of the playoffs. McSorley hit 14 of 18 field goals, eight of 10 free throws and grabbed 10 rebounds. Nordhoff also set a school record with its 22nd victory, breaking the previous mark established by the 1990-91 Rangers. . .

Shaneya Harris of Kennedy finished the regular season as the area’s leading scorer, averaging 27.1 points per game. Harris also averaged 13.7 rebounds. . . .

Thousand Oaks held Palmdale to a season-low 29 points in a 56-29 playoff victory. Palmdale entered the game averaging 58 points. Senior point guard Kim Schielke scored 18 of Palmdale’s 29 points, finishing the season with a 20.9 points-per-game average. . . Burroughs Ridgecrest ended a string of seven consecutive Golden League championships for Palmdale with two wins over the Falcons. . . North Hollywood won its fifth consecutive Mid-Valley League title Friday with a 43-39 win over Van Nuys.

Wrestling: Sophomore James Castenada of Alemany remains undefeated in 37 matches after winning the 103-pound championship in the Southern Section Division IV wrestling finals Saturday at Glenn High. Castenada was 5-0 in the two-day tournament.

Teammate Willie Arreola (152 pounds) was 7-1 in the tournament to finish third. Castenada will advance to Saturday’s Southern Section Masters Meet at Fountain Valley High. Arreola (38-2) qualified as an alternate.

Girls’ soccer: The La Reina girls’ soccer team, ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division IV, have not allowed a goal since the Simi Valley tournament in December. Heading into Tuesday’s second-round playoff match, the Regents (15-3-1) have outscored their previous 11 opponents, 67-0.
